Suseribime
The daughter of Susanoo and the principal wife of Ōnamuchi. Ōnamuchi visited Susanoo in the underworld land of Ne no katasukuni (see Ne no kuni) and there met Suseribime, but Susanoo presented Ōnamuchi with numerous trials before he would permit the two to be married. Aided by Suseribime, Ōnamuchi succeeded in overcoming the trials, and at last escaped from Ne no kuni. As Ōnamuchi fled, Susanoo called after him, urging him to use his valor to subjugate his brother kami, to take on the new name Ōkuninushi and rule the land with Suseribime as his principal wife.
Although Ōnamuchi had earlier married Yakamihime of Inaba, he honored Susanoo's request and made Suseribime his principal wife, returning Yakamihime to Inaba. But Ōnamuchi also enraged Suseribime by traveling to the Niigata area, where he married the local maiden Nunakawahime. In confusion, Ōnamuchi decided to leave Izumo for the Yamato area, but he was reconciled to Suseribime and the two renewed their wedding vows, remaining settled in Izumo. The poem sequences exchanged during this episode between Nunakawahime, Ōnamuchi, and Suseribime were thereafter referred to as kamugatari ("divine speech").

神語(しんご)とは
、「幸魂奇魂守給幸給」(さきみたま くしみたま まもりたまえ さきはえたまえ)の事で、最も重要な「唱詞(となえことば)」でもある。
出雲大社や出雲大社教などでは、神語を唱えたり、奉書する伝統がある。 仏教徒が「南無阿弥陀仏」を唱えたり、キリスト教徒が「アーメン」と言ったりするように、出雲大社では「幸魂奇魂守給幸給」である。
神語の起源は日本神話にある。大己貴神が国造りの半ばで少彦名命に常世郷に先立たれて困難に直面し、出雲国に至り言挙げした時、海のかなたから、光る神が近づいてきた。それが「幸魂奇魂」(さきみたまくしみたま)であった。[1] そして「今何処にか住まむと欲ふ」との問いに「三諸山(みむろのやま)に住まむと欲ふ」と答えたので、大己貴神その地に宮を作り大三輪の神となった。 大国主大神は、「幸魂奇魂」の存在を知り、そして自分自身の中に潜む「幸魂奇魂」の霊力により「縁結びの神」になられた。 「幸魂奇魂」の「幸」(さき)は、「咲き」や「裂き」であり、増殖や分裂である。 「幸魂奇魂」の「奇」(くし)は、「串」や「櫛」であり、「整え」や「統一」を意味する。 「幸魂奇魂」は「分化繁殖」したモノを「整え統一」させ、大国主大神の道に神習い、明るく和やかな日々が送れるということを意味する[2]。 「神語」すなわち「幸魂奇魂守給幸給」(さきみたま くしみたま まもりたまえ さきはえたまえ)の神語は通常は三唱するが、非常にゆっくりと、また独特な節回しで唱える。 また神事では神職や参列者も神語を声に出して一緒に唱えることが多い。なお、出雲以外でも大神神社[3]や大国主大神を奉斎する神社が神語を用いる例もある。
なお葬儀や慰霊祭などでは幽冥神語(ゆうめいしんご)「幽世大神憐給恵給幸魂奇魂守給幸給」(かくりよのおおかみ あわれみたまえめぐみたまえ さきみたまくしみたま まもりたまえさきわえたまえ)を唱える。その他に神語を墨書し出雲大社に献納申し上げる「神語奉書」も盛大に行われている。

Shingō
A "divine title" affixed to the name of a kami. A wide variety of titles have come into use in accordance with the unique characteristics of kami, and as a result of historical changes in the way kami have been understood. In the ancient period, the title mikoto was used, while expressions such as myōjin ("shining kami"), daibosatsu (great bodhisattva), and gongen (avatar) came into use as a product of kami-buddha combinatory cults (shinbutsu shūgō). During the Edo period, the title reisha ("spirit shrine") was applied to the departed spirits of human beings.
The title mikoto, written variously with the characters 命 or 尊was used in ancient classics such as Kojiki and Nihongi as a title of respect for both kami and noble persons. It is believed that mi represents an honorific prefix, while koto means "thing," "event," or "word"; together, the reading mikoto has been interpreted as referring to a "noble personage," "minister" or "medium" (mikotomochi), and "noble child" (miko; see mikogami).
Nihongi differentiates between the usage of characters 尊 and 命 for mikoto, stating that the earlier character is used to refer only to kami of the utmost dignity with direct linkage to the imperial descent, while the latter character is used for all other kami.
The title myōjin 明神 as applied to Japanese kami is believed to evolved from an earlier term myōjin 名神 ("eminent kami"), which was used in ancient works like Engishiki to refer to kami of particularly noteworthy power. Under the influence of the homophonic myōjin 明神 ("shining deity") found in Chinese and Buddhist texts, the latter character combination came to be applied to indigenous kami as well.
Daibosatsu is obviously a term of Buddhist origin, and refers to a "great kami that has awakened to the Way of the Bodhisattva." The title daibosatsu is first seen in 781, when the kami Hachiman was honored with the title Gokoku Reigen Iriki Jintsū Daibosatsu ("Great Bodhisattva of National Protection and Marvelous Spirit Power"). From that time, the title daibosatsu has been applied to numerous other kami, including Fuji Sengen Daibosatsu and Tado Daibosatsu.
Gongen (avatar) is likewise of Buddhist origin, a term deriving from the doctrine of honji suijaku ("original essence, manifest traces"). According to this belief, buddhas may provisionally manifest themselves in this world in the form of kami or deities indigenous to various locales. Some well-known kami bestowed with this title include Kumano Gongen, Kasuga Gongen, and Hakusan Gongen.
The title reisha originates with the Yuiitsu Shinto school of the Yoshida family, which first used the term to refer to a shrine erected over the grave of the school's founder. Mano Tokitsuna's Kokin shingaku ruihen describes reisha as "a general term referring to shrines devoted to the spirits of human beings," but the term was also later used as a title for the kami themselves. Within Yoshida Shintō, the titles reijin reisha and myōjin were all applied to deceased human spirits, and this usage influenced the use of the terms in other schools as well, including Yoshikawa Shintō and Suika Shintō, where they were applied to persons who had mastered the deepest imports of the religion. Some of these individuals included Yoshikawa Koretari, posthumously titled Miaredō Reisha, and Yamazaki Ansai, who was titled Suika Reisha.
Another unusual example of the attribution of shingō to humans is that of Sugawara Michizane, who was titled tenjin or "heavenly deity." See also shin'i, shinkai.

At the peak of 蓼科の峯 Mount Tateshina there lives 神鳥 a divine bird, resembling a raichoo 雷鳥 Raicho snow grouse, "Thunderbird".
In the morning and evening its voice can be heard to announce the time. The male bird is rather black, the female more yellow, with a black breast and white spots on it.
The chicks like to eat matsu no mi 松の実 pine nuts and green pine leaves.

In former times when many horses were kept outside, about six were selected and offered to 権現 the Gongen Deity.
When the horses kneeled in front of the Shrine, a divine bird messenger came with small branches of a pine tree and offered them to the horses. The horses took them in their mouth and went home. If the branches are kept close, the horses will not have problems with wild animals or dokuhebi 毒蛇 poisonous serpents.

諏訪湖 Lake Suwako freezes every year in the coldest season.
During that time, the 神狐 divine Fox messenger might walk over the lake to the Suwa Shrine. Sometimes even horses with heavy burdens can cross it.
If there is no Fox messenger walking over the ice, it is not strong enough.
In Spring, when it gets warmer and the ice melts, the fox comes back from the Shrine and walks back over the lake. From that time on, humans can not cross any more and the ice melts.

A senjiki dana センジキ棚 special ritual shelf for offering of rice, called senjiki 握り飯(センジキ). When the priest claps his hands two times, the sound will wake two karasu 烏 crows which come to eat the offerings. They are the messengers of this Shrine and are called

Hassokuan 八足案
Eight-footed table used to bear items such as heihaku, shinsen, and tamagushi.

Takatsuki 高坏
Pedestal table used to bear the shinsen. In ancient times it was made of clay, but later it came to be made of wood and lacquered.
The kaku-takatsuki is angular, and the maru-takatsuki is round.

シバオリさん Shibaori san 柴折さん / 柴折り様 Shibaori sama


At the entrance of a pass or mountain road passing people and forest workers make offerings for their safety to a deity called Shibagami.
They offer a few branches of shiba 柴 brushwood or kusa 草 grass from the roadside.

Shibatatsuhime Jinja 柴立姫神社



On the way up to the Shrine is a red Torii gate and this male symbol.
People come here to pray for children, not getting female diseases and other problems during a pregnancy.
Once upon a timeon
a Samurai and his daughter passed here on a long journey. The daughter was very tired but her father got angry, killed her and buried her, putting a piece of shiba 柴 brushwood on the grave.
The villagers took pity of the girl and built a small Shrine to venerate her.
Since then women with female health problems come here to pray.

Oshiori Sama, O-Shiori sama オシオリサマ,足軽るさま Ashigaru Sama
At the entrance of the village is a valley called シオリ谷 Shioridani.
In former times, 柴折りさま Shibaori sama was venerated here.
If people offer some shiba 柴 brushwood before leaving the hamlet, they will walk easily (ashigaru, ashi ga karuku naru)

If there are two hamlets connected via a pass, there is just one way to reach each other.
Each hamlet has a statue of 地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu called オシオリサマ O-Shiori Sama.
If travelers pass the statue, they make offerings of shiba brushwood and pray that they will walk easily.

Shibagami シバガミ
If people pass a road with a statue of 石地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu or 道祖神 the Dosojin Wayside gods, they make offerings to シバオリサン Shibaori san of shiba brushwood and pray for the safety on the road.
To get protection from the pranks of tanuki 狸 badgers, yamainu 山犬 wolves or notsugo ノツゴ Yokai monsters, they break (ori) green grass by the roadside and make an offering.


notsugo (notsuko) is an invisible yokai that makes it difficult for villagers to walk in the forests.
In other places it makes the sound of a child crying or screaming.

トンビョウサン tonbyoo san or トンベ神 Tonbegami are other names for serpents. Some have the power to possess humans.
They are small serpents of about 30 cm. They like to possess humans with resentments for others.

If people make proper offerings of shiba 柴 for 柴折さま the Shibaori Sama, they will not be bewitched by the Hidarugami ひだる神 Hunger Gods.

The 石神さん Ishigami san is also シバオリさん a Shibaori san deity.
If people make a fire on the day of this deity, there will be a fire in their home.

If someone walks up a mountain road and suddenly feels very hungry and cold sweat, this is called ダリガミ Hidarigami
In Tosayama this is called kuwan クワン. In that case one must put something to eat into the mouth, even a rain of rice will do.
If one makes proper offerings to Shibaori Sama, this will not happen.
kuwan kuwan クワン imitates the sound of a fox.

aramitama 荒魂 / 荒御魂 - nigimitama 和魂

This is one of the ways of referring to a spirit (mitama)
by its function or inner workings, placing it in opposition to nigimitama.
Aramitama is recognized and understood as the ferocious, rough, or violent manifestation of a spirit (mitama).
Although the nigimitama is the normal condition of the spirit,
the aramitama appears during times of war or natural disasters.
This aramitama changes back to the nature of nigimitama by receiving ritual attention.
However, using aramitama to refer to the state wherein the spirits of kami (shinrei) or their power become manifest is thought to have been closer to the original usage.
Among shrines, many worship the two aspects of the mitama separately.
For example, Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki worships the aramitama of the Sumiyoshi kami,
while Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka worships its nigimitama.

mitama, goryoo 御霊 a spirit
Utsushimi 現御身(うつしみ) is the shinrei 神霊 divine spirit of a kami 神 Shinto Deity in this world.
とは神の現世で御霊であり、御霊とは神霊のことを指す。
御霊実とはご神体のことである。
tama 霊 spirit
is a general term for spirit or soul in ancient times. In addition to human spirit, it also refers to spirit or spiritual force in nature.
A human soul is considered a spiritual entity that comes from outside and dwells in the body, endowing the individual with energy and personality. The word tamashii (spirit, soul) presumably had an original meaning of the "function of tama."
Mitama (御魂、御霊) is an honorific term for tama. When it is written with the characters 神霊 (mitama), it refers to the spirit of a kami.
Later on, the spelling of 御霊 came to be used exclusively for goryō, a spirit that brings hazards to human society.

Shinojima Lord's Procession Festival
This unique festival is one of the trademarks of the small and tranquil island of Shinojima,
located right in the middle of the Mikawa Bay entrance between the Chita and Atsumi peninsulas.
The ritual of the Daimyo Gyoretsu Procession is carried out in order to protect
Ojinjiki-sama, the spirit of Hachioji Shrine, while it is moved to Shinmei Shrine
and brought back on the following day.
It is believed that the power of Ojinjiki-sama will make onlookers go blind,
so all the lights in the road between the two shrines are turned off during the ceremony.
On the next day, after a shamanic dance at the Shinojima Beach,
the crowd of almost-naked men will get in a big brawl in order to decide
who gets the Otanagi-sama of the "Shinboku" Divine Tree.

At the Shrine for the Deity 三吉大明神 Miyoshi Daimyojin at 大平山 Mount Taiheisan
a believer once had a strange dream.
If a man goes to the top of the mountain to worship the deity he will get great profits.
Since the wife of the believer had seen the same dream,
both built a small Shrine and thus had many wishes granted.
After a wish is granted they must make an offering of mochi 餅 rice cakes.
Otherwise they will be cursed.

. tsue 杖と伝説 Legends about a walking staff .
When 八幡宮 the Shrine Hachimangu was founded in Usui,
the local lord 臼井太郎興胤 Usui Taro Okitane (? - 1313, age 25) placed his walking stick in the ground.
If the staff would stand and grow, this would be the show of shinrei 神霊 a divine spirit.
The staff began to grow and became 樟の神木 the divine Kusunoki camphor tree.

The Shrine for the Deity 甲太明神 Kotai Myojin was built on a relevation of the Deity.
A muku no ki 椋の木 Muku tree Aphananthe aspera was growing in one night.
The place was then called muku seichi 椋生地 place where the Muku grows.

At 諏訪神社 the Shrine Suwa Jinja in Iwaki city and 泉崎の八幡神社 the Shrine Hachiman Jinja in Izumisaki
there are ema 絵馬 amulets in rememberance of a pilgrimage to 出羽三山 the Three Mountains of Dewa.
They depict pilgrims at a ritual of the waterfall.
In front of the waterfall is a mirror, which represents 神霊 Shinrei, the divine spirit.

At the homes of the Ainu there are two open windows.
One is called 「かもいとの」Kamoitono and
the other one 「ふうくはん」Fuukuhan.

Fuukuhan represents the spirit of Yoshitsune

Konpira Shin reikoku 金比羅神霊験 the miracle of the Konpira Deity
金右衛門 Kinemon was a lumber dealer. He put all his lumber on a ship.
The sailors wanted to steal his money and tried to kill him.
They tied him up and threw him into the sea.
That night in the yard of Kinemon's home, his wife heard a strange sound
and she saw Kinemon tied up and falling down.
Kinemon was a strong believer in 金比羅 the Konpira Deity and had prayed
to Konpira San to save him.
When he went to Konpira and told the story, he got his money back.
He gave all the money to the Shrine to built Kondo 金堂 a Golden Hall there.

養老町 Yoro town

taki no shinrei 滝の神霊 Shinrei, the divine spirit of a waterfall
People who take ablutions in 鼓ヶ滝 the waterfall Tsuzumigataki or
in 養老の滝 the waterfall Yoro no Taki in Gifu have to keep special taboos.
If they use a gourd to scoop water or eat the fish from the river or cook soy beans with the water,
they will make the deity of the waterfall angry and might die on the spot.

If the price for rice becomes very high or if there will be a natural disaster
a special star appears above 阿蘇山 Mount Asosan.
On the 13th of May suddenly all the mice left the houses,
on the 17th rain begun to fall and destroyed the fields,
on the 18th birds flew away from 藤崎祇園 Fujisaki Gion.
On that day in the evening there was a huge eruption of the volcano Asosan.

The shaboku 社木 divine trees at 肥後の野原八幡 the Shrine Nohara Hachimangu in Higo
had fallen down during a Taifun.
But then there was a large trembling of the ground and all the trees were standing up again.
People think this was not unusual, but due to the shinrei 神霊 divine spirit of the place.

During the time of 清原岑成 Kiyohara no Minenari (799 - 861) as regend of Dazaifu
the damage to the roof of the Shrine had become great and for repair
the people felled the large tree in the Shrine compound.
But Minenari was cursed by the divine tree and died soon after.

Foxes are known to bewitch people and make them eat abura-age アブラアゲ / 油揚げ fried Tofu.
Sometimes such a person seems to have become the speaker of 神霊 Shinrei, a divine spirit.
Once a child of 14 years became bewitched and started eading a lot of fried Tofu.
Once the child said "When I become 19, I will stop that!"
And indeed, after his 19th birthday, the child became normal again, after a priest performed a purification ritual.

Around 1595, the famous thief 石川五右衛門 Ishikawa Goemon sneaked into 水無瀬殿 the Hall Minase Dono.
But this was a hall to venerate shinrei 神霊 the divine spirit of Emperor Gotoba.
So his body begun to shrink and he could not leave the place any more.

takuhi gongen 焼火権現 Takuhi Divine Fire Deity
At night from the sea around 隠岐 Oki Island, shinka 神火 a divine light was seen, believed to be made
by Takuhi Gongen 焼火権現 the Deity of Divine Fire.
This deity could calm down high waves.
When a boat was near shipwrecking, the sailors prayed to this Deity. Then a divine light would show and they were saved.

Deity in residence : 大日霊貴尊(おおひるめむちのみこと) Ohirumemuchi no Mikoto
(This is another name for Amaterasu no Okami.)
Takuhi Shrine, which is located on mountain Takuhi (452m above the sea level), is dedicated to deity of safe sea voyages.
The legend says on 30th December of Japanese lunisolar calendar, three fire balls rose from the sea
and entered the cave where the shrine is located today.
This is the origin of Takuhi Shrine.
A Shinto ritual called “Ryutousai” was held on the day where people from every part of the Oki Islands used to gather at the shrine to worship the sacred fire.
Nowadays, this custom continues on the fifth of lunisolar New Year as “hatsumairi” meaning the first shrine visit of the year.
Each village on the two islands has a dedicated date for the village where the village people gather and celebrate.
The building of the shrine was rebuilt in 1732. It is the most ancient construction on the Oki Islands.
It was constructed with method revolutionary at the time.
Each part was built in Osaka and assembled here (similar to prefabricated construction today).
The shrine has been designated as Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1992.
The historic and religious significance and the timeless beauty of the architecture still remain to this date.
The belief in the burning fire shrine is well known throughout Japan,
as evidenced by its depiction in prints by Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.

10数年前、高杉神社 Shrine Takasugi Jinja のうわなり神事に霊依人として参加した人が、
自分には神霊は憑かないと言っていたのに、神事が始まると取り憑かれた。
Uwanari was a kabuki play of the Kabuki Jūhachiban, first performed in 1699.
The Eighteen Best Kabuki Plays is a set of kabuki plays, strongly associated with
the Ichikawa Danjūrō line of actors ever since their premieres.

A demon had been tormenting the farmers for a long time.
They used a long gun, put in a lead bullet with a prayer to Amida Butsu 南無阿弥陀仏 Buddha Amitaba and shot.
Until now no bullet had an effect, but this time,
a special bullet with shinrei 神霊 the spiritual power of Amida was able to hit the demon and kill him.

shingun 神軍 / jingun ジングン the Kami are fighting
かみいくさ kamiikusa, kami-ikusa


This word has two main meanings:
1- The Kami are fighting amongst themselves. This could be 神の軍勢 the army of the Kami.
2- In 佐渡 Sado, there is a special fight of the 山の神 Yamanokami on the 9th day of the second lunar month.
On this day people are not allowed to go the the mountains.

At a place named 西浜 Nishihama in Dewa no Kuni 出羽国 the Dewa Domain, there is a phenomenon called 神軍 Shingun.
After a strong rainstorm there are stones falling from the sky, looking like yanone 矢の根 arrowheads.

In Dewa no Kuni 出羽国 the Dewa Domain, there is a penomenon called 神軍 Shingun.
After a strong rainstorm there are stones falling from the sky, looking like yanone 矢の根 arrowheads.
At the beach called 矢嶋 Yajima near 鳥海山 Mount Chokaisan there are white clouds over the sea, coming from 松前 Matsumae. These white clouds are not moving and the earth begins to rattle like an earthquake. If people go to the beach a little later they find various yajiri ishi 鏃石 arrowhead stones on the beach.

This phenomenon is also seen in other parts along the coast, in 青森県 Aomori, 岩手県 Iwate, 茨城県 Ibaraki, even in 松前 Matsumae, Hokkaido.

In the old domain of Mutsu no Kuni 陸奥国 there is a place named Tori no Umi 鳥の海 (Sea of the Birds).
Every year during the coldest season there is a phenomenon called shingun 神軍. After a great rainstorm, there are yane 矢根 arrowheads falling from the sky.

Iso no kami いそのかみ
Every year on the 10th day of the second lunar month, the deity Isonokami comes walking over the mountains and the sea.
This is called shingun 神軍.
On this day there is usually a great storm and the ground is shaking. On the next day 石の矢の根 arrowhead stones are on the beach. Raifuishi 雷斧石 arrowhead stones can be found in other places too.

At the Shrine for 鹿伏明神社 Kabuse Myojin in Sado there is usually a strong rainstorm on the 9th day of the second lunar month, which gets wore over night. It calms down the next morning and on the 10th day there is fine weather. The local people on this night the shingun 神軍 is there and the people do not dare to go out.
On the next morning there are strange yanone 矢の根 arrowheads on the ground. People collect them and keep them for their protection

Akumi shingun 飽海神軍
At the Akumi Shrine 出羽国庄内飽海社 the deity 大物忌大神 Omonoimi no Kami is venerated.
Once a year there is a strong storm and the weather is very wild. During this time yanone ishi 矢の根石 arrowhead stones fall from the sky.
