These Kami lost one of their two eyes.

Once the deity of 十二神社 the Shrine Juni Jinja, Yamanokami, fell down in a field of garlic and lost one leg,
looked at the ears of wheat and lost one eye.
So he is now known as 片目片足の神様 the Deity with one Eye and one Leg.

In the pond of the Shinto Shrine, there are 隻眼の魚 fish with one eye.
They had a fight with the sojin 祖神 ancestors and lost one eye as punishment.

. Ujigami, Ubusuna 氏神 clan deity .
In Iikura 居倉 when the Ujigami 氏神 clan deity descendet for a visit, it hit his eye at a hooki no ki 箒の木 summer cypress (broom cypress). Therefore the villagers do not make brooms.

In Azusayama 梓山 when the Ujigami 氏神 clan deity descendet for a visit, he entangled his legs in 山藤の蔓 the wisteria wine and hurt his eye with kuri 栗 chestnuts.
Therefore the villagers do not plant wisteria or chestnuts. Even if they do, the plants wither.

When the Ujigami 氏神 clan deity of the Kobayashi family descendet for a visit, he hurt one eye with a kyuuri きゅうり cucumber.
Therefore the villagers do not plant cucumbers.

. Sanno 山王 the "Mountain King" .
He is Ujigami 氏神 the clan deity venerated at 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja. He often goes out at night to look after the water and check the growth of uri 瓜 water melons.
One evening a dog howled at him and he fled. He slipped on the cow dung and hurt his eye on a gomagara ゴマガラ sesame plant.
He now had only one eye and the villagers never plant sesame any more.

Shrine Kasuga no Yashiro 春日社

The deity at the Shrine Kasuga no Yashiro has only one eye.
When he descendet for a visit, he entangled his legs in fuji 藤 the wisteria wine and hurt his eye with goma ゴマ sesame.
The villgers cut off all the wisteria and do not grow sesame any more.

The monkey of an ema 絵馬 votive tablet at 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja had been painted by the famous 狩野元信 Kano Motonobu.
It came to life at night and devastated the nearby fields every night.
They had to cover its eyes with cloth to keep it in place.

Kappa is venerated as 山王様 Sanno Sama during the festival on the 15th day.

. Mizuchi, Medochi 蛟 water snake Yokai .
Mizuchi ミヅチ is a kind of water snake monster.
Until the Meiji period, people who passes at 山王様の沼 the swamp of Sanno Sama dismounted their horse and payed respect to the deity.
The Masters of the Pond at 吾妻神社 the Azuma Shrine in Kisarazu where two 白蛇 white serpents.
At the beginning of the Meiji period they came to live at the Swamp of Sanno Sama.

A woman from 和泉 Izumi had thrown herself into a pond.
Her onryoo 怨霊 revengeful ghost had become a huge serpent in the pond.
The serpent would eat people and cause much damage.
So the villagers aseked the priest from 日吉神社 Hiyoshi Shrine to have a ritual to appease her.
Through this great power, the serpent perished.

Near the small Shrine where 山王様 Sanno Sama is venerated is a small road which is dark even during the day.
There lives a fusuma ふすま Nobusuma monster that brings disaster to the people.

Some children had gone to 山王坂 the Sannozaka slope to collect wild herbs, but one of them did not come back.
The next morning they found it on the embankment of Sannozaka.
The lunch it had taken yesterday was all smelly.
It must have been bewitched by a fox.

A doctor from Fukura was walking along 山王坂 the Sannozaka slope when he met 大入道 the O-Nyudo monster, which took away his fish.
This was itachi イタチ a weasel. On days when it rains, an Itachi can shape-shift into an O-Nyudo monster.

On the old road to 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja there is a stone imprint called
garan baba がらん婆 old woman named Garan
They say the Garan family lived here, but not much is known about it.

In the compound of the Shrine where 山王様 Sanno Sama is venerated, there lived a monster and some people got ill. It was abandoned because nobody wanted to live therer or buy any land.

Sometimes people saw a light at night below the shrine where 山王様 Sanno Sama is venerated.
A boy thought his brother had come to show him the way, but when he called the name of his brother, he got no answer.
He kept calling and suddenly the light of the lantern estinguished and all was gone. It must have been a Tanuki.

The boulders of Sanno Gongen, Sanno Iwaya 山王岩屋 are at the very narrow part of the Abukumagawa gorge, where a huge boulder hang on each side. The messenger of Sanno Gongen, a saru 猿 monkey comes here often and his footprints are in the rock.
The warlord Abe no Sadato 安倍貞任 used this place for the defense of his territory.

Nangu Jinja 南宮神社 Nangu Shrine
The Deity 大山咋命 Oyama Kui no Kami had fallen in love with 和加佐姫命 (a combination of the legendary 金山彦 Kanayamahiko and 金山姫 Kanayamahime) but the Princess did not like him.
She run away and slipped in a field of hemp and of sweet potato leaves, she hurt her eye at a branch of a tea tree and finally reached 船形山 Mount Funagatayama (1500 m). The Shinto priest had a mortar and his her there.
The preist sat on the mortar and told Iku no Kami to give up.
At the village of Nangu they do not grow hemp nor sweet potatoes nor tea.
If men from the village of the Sanno Shrine go up to Mount Funagata, they will get a divine punishment.
Nangu Shrine is one of the 鹽竈神社14末社 14 sub-Shrines of 鹽竈神社 Shrine Shiogama Jinja.

Oyamakuhi no kami (大山咋神)
The god is also called Yamasue no onushi no kami.
He is the son of Otoshi no Kami and Amenochikarumizu hime.
The 'kuhi' of his name means pile, (heavy beam of timber) indicating that he is a deity who drives a pile of heavy timber into Oyama ("Big Mountain"), and the mountain's owner. According to the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters - Japan's oldest historical record), the deity is enshrined in Hieno-yama (later called and Mt. Hiei) and Matsuo, Kazuno District, and Narikabura is where the deity resides.
Since Enryaku-ji Buddhist Temple of the Tendai sect was built on Mt. Hiei, the deity also came to be regarded as the guardian deity of the Tendai sect and Enryaku-ji Temple. The god is also called "Sanno," the king of Mt. Hiei.
A Shinto school derived from the Tendai sect was called "Sanno Shinto," later changed to "Sanno Ichijitsu Shinto" by Tenkai (a priest of the Tendai sect, who lived in the early Edo period). Dokan OTA built Hie-jinja Shrine by moving Oyamakuhi no kami from Kawagoe-Hiyoshi-sha Shrine to make it the guardian deity of Edo-jo Castle.
During the Edo period, the deity was regarded as that of the Tokugawa family, and since the Meiji period, it has been regarded as the guardian deity of the imperial palace.
Hiyoshi-Taisha Shrine at the foot of Mt. Hiei is the headquarters of all the Hie-jinja Shrines that worship Oyamakuhi no kami across the country. Later, Omononushi (a deity in Japanese mythology) was enshrined in Hie-jinja Shrines; Omononushi is called "Obie" ("Big Hie") and Oyamakuhi no kami "Kobie" ("Small Hie").
"Sanno" is the general term for these two deities. Omononushi is enshrined in Nishihongu ("West Main Shrine") and Oyamakuhi no kami in Higashihongu ("East Main Shrine").
Besides, the two deities are enshrined in Higashihongu (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo Prefecture), and also in Matsuo-taisha Shrine (Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City).

In the compound of 日枝神社 Shrine Hie Jinja there used to be an old pond, where a special yakifuna 焼鮒 "burned Funa" lives.
When 親鸞聖人 Saint Shinran threw a dead burned Funa into the pond, it came back to life and its descendants live there to our day.
Its scales still have the color of burning.

In the estate of shooya 庄屋 the village headman there is a sanctuary for 山王様 Sanno Sama.
In former times, a family member had killed 白い蛇 a white serpent and as punishment grandmother became blind.
To atone for the killing, they built the sanctuary.

Nogami reigns in the wilderness.
The main festival for this Kami is on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
This Kami is also known for its close relation to bulls and cows.
The festival for Nojin at 今堀日吉神社 the Hiyoshi Shrine of Imabori is held on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.
It may be related to the festival for 牛神 Ushigami.

Tokobo no hashi トコボの橋 "The bridge of Tokobo, the Kappa".
Coming from the compound of 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja there is a bridge over the river 藤田川 Fujitagawa, called
Tokobo no hashi トコボの橋 "The bridge of Tokobo, the Kappa".
If people want to cross it, there comes a Kappa and pulls them into the river by their legs.
Therefore people avoid passing this bridge.

On the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in 1281, the Mongolians were coming to Japan.
The bell of 日吉山王神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Sanno Jinja begun to ring and the temple treasure, a divine sword, stood up to the West.

Once in the past the priest of 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja wanted to see the object of worship.
He practised purification rituals for seven day and then opened the 厨子 small Shrine.
He saw the figure of a farmer holding a hoe.
When he looked inside a second time, he saw only flames.
The priest expressed his greatfulness by offering a huge Shrine name plate for the gate with the inscription
山王大明神 Sanno Daimyojin.

山王様のバチ The punishment of Sanno Sama
A grandmother became suddenly ill in front of the small sanctuary for 山王様 Sanno Sama in the garden and died soon after.
Her grandson asked a diviner for advise and was told that grandmother had kicked at the small sanctuary.
So he built a bigger Shrine to apologize for the sin of his grandmother.

If someone wants to curse someone else, he has to come at the the old double-hour of the ox, hit a voodoo doll with a strong nail into the tree at 日吉神社 the Hiyoshi shrine. Then break one branch of the tree and throw it into the direction of the enemy.

komabiki iwa 駒引き岩 Horse-pulling rock
At Shimo-Yushima in 奈良田 Narada village theree is 山王神社 the Shrine Sanno Jinja.
In the compound is a rock called 駒引き岩 Komabiki iwa.
On this rock there are many imprints that look like the hooves of a horse.
They say they date back to the time when 孝謙天皇 Koken Tenno (718 - 770) Empress Shotoku came to Narada and died.
Her grave is in 法王神社 the Shrine Hoo Jinja 奈良法王神社.

The meaning of rice "omusubi" comes from the main deity of this Shrine:

高皇産霊神 (たかみむすびのかみ) Takami musubi no kami
a deity for knotting "couples" together (in Japanese "musubu 結" and "en-musubi 縁結").
The popular name for a nigiri rice ball "musubi" came to be given to this shrine as a nick name.

Takamimusuhi no kami. Takamimusuhinokami 高木神

is a god of agriculture in Japanese mythology, who was the second of the first beings to come into existence.
It is speculated that Takamimusubi was the original god that the Japanese imperial family claimed descent from.

The Kojiki explains that Atsuta Shrine was founded to house the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, a legendary sword.

Atsuta Shrine is located in “Atsuta Forest,” a spacious, verdant shrine grove. Atsuta no mori 熱田の森.

Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (草薙の剣)
is a legendary Japanese sword and one of three Imperial Regalia of Japan.
originally called Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi (天叢雲剣, "Heavenly Sword of Gathering Clouds"),
but its name was later changed to the more popular Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi ("Grass-Cutting Sword").

This sword had been stolen three times, but came flying back two times.
The third time the sword killed the thief before coming back.

In 1838, a pair of brothers had the dead body of their father pass though 一の鳥居 the first Torii gate of 熱田神社 the Atsuta Shrine.
They were banned from the town. The home of the brothers fell into decay and they both became kojiki 乞食 beggars.

Aichi あま市 Ama city

At 妙心山正法寺 the Zen Temple Shoho-Ji there is a bottle with four stones buried in the ground.
There was a farmer passing the nearvy river who always washed four melons and four eggplants in the river, before he went to sell them. His load was always heavy but after washing the vegetables, it felt light.
The same happened to a vendor of salt.
There was also a bottle in the bamboo grove with water of a good fragrance.
This bottle was given as an offering to 熱田社 the Atsuta Shrine each year on the 5th of June.

An imperial envoy is sent to the shrine to offer goheimotsu (strips of white paper for Shinto rituals). kamisama no o-fuda sama 神様のお札様 the amulet of the Deity
Around 1860, the amulets from Atsuta Shrine came raining from the sky in many regions of Japan.
The people rejoiced and danced, singing
ee ja nai ka , ee ja naika 「ええじゃないか、ええじゃないか」.
A farmer who was on a visit to 伊勢神宮 the Ise Jingu Shrine was walking through a forest, when the amulets fell down from the sky. He picked them up and went back home to 大井 Oi city.
But there the amulets had allso fallen from the sky and he waw quite surprized.

The Ee ja nai ka and the Meiji Restoration Hosono Yōsai 細 野 要 斎 (1811–1878), an Owari domain official, left a voluminous diary titled Kankyō manpitsu 感興漫筆 (Random Jottings Composed at Leisure), containing accounts from 1836 to 1878.
Entries addressing the late months of 1867 describe the ee ja nai ka ええじゃないか phenomenon that developed in Nagoya. Yōsai’s portrayals of the ee ja nai ka contradict its received image as a rowdy pandemonium in which the populace expressed their resentment against the Tokugawa regime.
Rather, what we see is a series of localized religious activities commemorating talismans (ofuda お札) that reportedly fell from the sky, many of them representing deities particularly popular in Nagoya.

Atsuta Jingu no kaji 熱田神宮の火事 fire at Atsuta Shrine
At the foot of a large kusu no ki 楠 camphor tree a beggar was asleep.
He woke up because there was a fire coming from the tree and had almost reached the main Shrine hall.
The head priest wanted to save goshintai 御神体 the object of worship of the Shrine, but the key to the hall did not fit.
The father of the head priest came by and could open the lock.
The father had gotten a message from the Deity about the coming fire.
After the fire was quenched, the father went back to his home.
When the head priest went to his father's home to thank him, the father said he had never left his home and did not know about thie fire.
It must have been the Deity who had saved the hall.

Temple Jingu-Ji in Atsuta 熱田神宮寺
Gokiso, Showa Ward, Nagoya 医王山神宮寺 Iosan Jingu-Ji had been founded in 813.

When they wanted to construct a gate for 熱田神宮寺 the Temple Jingo-Ji in Atsuta and had dug into the ground for about one meter, something moved.
The workers were surprized and continued carefully. They found a bird in the ground, the size of a raven, which flew up and away.
Five days later the priest died.

One year they wanted to clean the sacred well of 熱田神宮寺 the Temple Jingo-Ji in Atsuta .
They scooped out all the water from the well and at the bottom in the sand they found a bird with black feathers like a raven. The bird flew up into the sky.
A few days later the priest of the 医王院 Temple Io-In died.
Maybe this was related, people wondered.

A farmer was plowing his field when the oxen suddenly stopped, jumped up and wanted to run away.
When the farmer dug at this place, he found a jinseki 神石 sacred stone.
The villagers built a small Shrine, callilng it 熱田神社 Atsuta Jinja, and venerated the stone

Fukubutsuzoo 福仏坊 a priest named Fukubutsuzo, Auspicious priet
Once there lived a strange man in the mountains of Aizu.
Ne never came down to the village and avoided meeting people.
Around 1645 a forest worker had seen him and said he looked like an old man of about 70 or 80 years.
In fact he had come to the village when he was about 25 tears old and told a villager that he had ovserved the calting of a bell in 熱田 Atsuta (Aichi).
This bell must have been more than a few hunded years old . . . how strange.

Ubusuna Kojin 産土荒神 is the Kojin-version of the Ubusunagami deity.
He is venerated during a birth.
In the Bitchu region he is called heso no oo Kojin ヘソノオ荒神 Kojin of the umbilical cord.

The man went there observing what happened when a beautiful lady (the fox had shape-shifted) came to invite him to have a bath.

A villager of the hamlet were people of 加賀の新田氏 the Nitta clan from Kaga lived had their ubusugami 産土神 deity of their birth place venerated at 白山神社 the Hakusan Shrine. The messenger of the deity was a hebi 蛇 serpent. This serpent was large and thick and had many children.

On the mountain road connecting 須佐 Susa and 小佐 Kosa there is a small Shrine.
A stone named Tateishi sama 立石さま Honorable Tateishi is venerated there.
People come here to pray for Safety at Sea, Protection from Disasters and Health for the Family.
Some say it is the grave of a nobleman and gold was hidden in the grave.
It links to a great cave where hakuryuu 白竜 a White Dragon lived.

At the roots of the old pine tree at 白山神社 Shirayama Shrine there lived goshiki ryuujin 五色龍神 a dragon Deity with five colors.

If people tried to touch the tree or break branches for firewood, they would experience of lot of bad luck.
Eventually people would not come here any more and the Shrine fell into decay.
At that time the 白山竜神 dragon deity of Shirayama appeared in a dream of a local fisherman.
At the root of the pine appeared a halo and said if they would revive the shrine, all would find good luck and his family would not experience illnes or poverty ever again.
The fisherman did as he was told in the dream and lived happily ever after.

The master of the local pond 玉金の池 was a koi 鯉 carp.
One day a man shot it with a gun and ate the fish, but soon he became ill with palsy.
The friend who had told him about the carp became a mouth disease.
Since then people did not fish in the pond any more.
If the villagers clean the pond during a drought, it will soon start to rain.
In July they make an offerind of a life carp to 白山神 the Shirayama Shrine.

oosuzu 大鈴, a large temple bell
Once a man walked around the compound of Shirayama Shrine at night, he could hear the sound of a huge bell rolling down, between his legs and then disappeard.
When he reached the graveyard of the temple 龍泉寺 Ryusen-Ji and crossed the bridge, the bell came rolling again, passed between his legs and then disappeared.

butsuzoo 仏像 a Buddha statue
Each member of the family 中島家 Nakajima, 熊崎家 Kumazaki and 熊崎家 Kumasaki once had the same dream:
"Go digging in the fields in front of the shrine. "
When they did they found a black Buddha statue.
They brought the statue to 白山神社 the Hakusan Shrine as an offering, but it got lost later.

In the back of 海老穴の白山神社 the Shirayama Shrine in Ebina there is a hole where water comes out.
In former times there was a huge ebi 海老 lobster, hence the name of the area.
Every year, the villagers had to make an offering of a young woman to the lobster.
One year a girl from a hunter family was chosen and she offered to go.
She sat in front of the hole and prayed all night.
Suddenly a strong flash of lightning was seen, heading toward the sky.
Next morning the girl was still sitting there in prayer and the lobster was gone for ever.

hakuryuu 白竜 Hakuryu, White Dragon
The Waterfall basin Hakuja no Taki 白蛇の滝 the the waterfall of the White Serpent is very deep and maybe has no end.
It is about 4 km long like a tunnel and reaches 最上川 the river Mogamigawa.
If anyone falls in this basin, he will never come back.
The master of this waterfall eventually went to heaven and became a hakuryuu 白竜 white dragon.

On evenings with rain villagers saw lanterns going on and off. Sometimes they saw a creature like a bride with watabooshi 綿帽子 a torn wedding hat.
