. 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai .
During the times of 後光厳天皇 Gokogon Tenno (1338 - 1374), the priest 覚乗上人 Saint Kakujo from 西大寺 the Temple Saidai-Ji held a ritual for 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai as honjibutsu 本地仏 the original Buddhist identity of 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami at 伊勢内外宮 the Shrines of Ise.
Then he had a dream vision:
At 二見浦 Futamiura he saw the golden figure of a 龍蛇形 Ryuja Dragon Serpent.
Kakujo threw his Buddhist robes into the sea, but did not see the figure of the deity.
Soon he had another dream vision:
At 無量寿寺 the Temple Muryoju-Ji he saw himself carving Amida Sanzon 阿弥陀三尊 Amida Sanzon Statues.
When he went to the temple, he saw that the statue of Amida was wearing the Buddhist robe he had thrown into the sea.

dozoku tsubuteishi 土俗礫石 / ドゾクツブテイシ special pebbles

On the beach of 伊勢山 Iseyama there is a huge boulder.
All the rocks nearby are of a different stone material.
It came here because 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami played with rocks and pebbles and this one landed here.

The younger sister of 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami is 栗島大明神 Kurishima Daimyojin.
When she married 摂州住居明神 the Deity Settsu Jukyo Myojin she became ill.
She was thrown into the see and floated away.
She landed at （かた）蚊田の浦 Kata no Ura in Kishu (Wakayama).
The people who saw her venerated her as 蚊田の栗島大明神 Kata no Kurishima Daimyojin.
She promised to protect all women from diesases.
Even now many women come here to prey for healing.

. mochi 餅と伝説 Legends about rice cakes .
On day 16 of January and July the hunters hold a special festival, otoki matsuri おときまつり/ オトキ祭 .
They put a shimenawa しめなわ sacred rope in the living room
and make offerings of mochi 餅 rice cakes to 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami.
The rice cake offerings are then brought to the mountain and can prevent avalanches.

yata no kagami 八咫の鏡 "The Eight Ta Mirror"
When 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami was hiding in 岩戸 the Iwado rock cave,
her features were reflected in this mirror.
So the Deity tried to go up to the sky.
The mirror was caught in the robe of an attendand and remained on earth.

Yata no Kagami (八咫鏡) is a sacred mirror that is part of the Imperial Regalia of Japan.
Its name literally means "The Eight Ta Mirror," a reference to its size and octagonal shape.

Tajikarao no mikoto 手力雄命 The Deikt Tajikarao
When 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami hid in Ame no Iwado 天岩戸 the Iwado cave,
the Deity 手力雄命 Tajikarao no mikoto tried to open the cave.
But he could not and fell down to earth. The place where he landed is
Togakushiyama 戸隠山 Mount Togakushi (1904).
Surprized by the noise, Kuzuryu no Kami 九頭龍神 the Dragon Deity with Nine Heads appeared.
Where he landed is now called Kuzuryuyama 九頭龍山 Mount Kuzuryu,
one of the peaks of 戸隠連峰 the Togakushi Mountain Range.

Ame-no-tajikarao アメノタジカラオ is written as 天手力男神 in Kojiki, and 天手力雄神 in Nihon Shoki.
手力雄命 Tajikara o no mikoto / 手力男神 Amenotadikaraonokmi
Tajikarao's name means heaven hand power.

九頭龍神 Dragon Deity with Nine Heads - legends from Nagano
Kuzuryu Okami 九頭龍大神 / 九頭竜大神

A local officer went to 九頭龍山 Mount Kuzuryu.
He was told the dragon lived in 種ヶ池 the pond Tanegaike and said:
"Dragon, if you are real, hide me in the water!"
Soon a swirl came up and drew the officer into the water.
Later when the descendants of the officer came to the pond, they were told to pray all night
and then look at the mountain.
Next morning they saw a dragon with nine heads wrapped aroung the muntain is seven rolls.

If a worshipper of 天照大神宮 the Shrine Tenshokotai Jingu becomes very ill,
he makes a wish to ujigami 氏神 the Clan deity and becomes well soon.
Such a person will be reborn as
ubusuna sama no ko うぶすな様の子 a child of the Ujigami deity.

uishi no tera ウイシの寺， uisu no tera ウイスの寺
During the construction of the Chokotei causeway, the sea was too deep to build anything.
People prayed two nights and two days to 天照大神 Amaterasu Omikami.
The water receeded and they could built a bridge between 安里町 Asato town and 若狭町 Wakasa town.
They also build a Shrine at each town, calling it
uishi no tera ウイシの寺， uisu no tera ウイスの寺.
This is probably the local dialect for O-Ise no Tera オイセ（お伊勢）の寺 "Temple from Ise".

長虹堤 Chokoutei Causeway

Chokoutei is one kilometer inter-island causeway connecting Naha and Asato, built in 1451.
Naha used to be an island and there was no bridge to connect the island to shore. Therefore when the Chinese envoys came to Okinawa, ships were lined up to between Naha and Asato to used them like a bridge.
King Sho Kinpuku ordered State Minister Kaiki to build a road connecting Naha and Asato. As water was deep and waves were high on this area, Kaiki thought the construction must be protected by the god. He erected an alter and prayed for a long time.
Eventually, water became low and the seabed appeared which let construction start. The road consists of seven bridges constructed from Sogen-ji Bridge to Ibegama (prayers' site surrounded by a stone wall in Kumoji).
When Kosei, a member of the Chinese investiture delegate, came to Okinawa in 1633, he noted this road in his poem that " "looks like a long rainbow from a distance".
Later this causeway started to be called Chokotei.
Chokotei causeway was the primary road linking Shuri and Naha from 1451 till Meiji era.
However traffic volume was dropped as train service started between Shuri and Naha in 1914 and a new Prefectural Road (current Kokusai-dori street) was opened to traffic.
Much of the Chokotei was lost in the Battle of Okinawa and to later development but parts of the causeway still remain.

The Deity 素戔嗚尊 Susanoo no Mikoto killed a huge serpent with eight tails and eight heads in Izumo
with his sword totsuka no tsurugi 十握剣.
In the fourth tail, he found a great sword inside the body of the serpent which he named
天の叢雲 "Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi".
He offered the sword to the goddess Amaterasu.

ryuuguu no hime 龍宮の姫， Rokubei Iwa 六兵衛岩
六兵衛という美男がお伊勢参りに出かけ、渡し舟から落としてしまった笠がきりもみして水に引き込まれた。お伊勢参りから帰ると病にかかり、危篤になった。その夜、重病の六兵衛がガバッと起きて小さな穴のある岩に入ってしまい、六兵衛岩になった。竜宮の姫が気に入って、自分の元に呼んだのだった。

The younger sister of 道士劉遵礼 had been kinnapped by 蛇王 Jao, the Serpent King and gave birth to 11 children.
With magical power, 遵礼 sealed the mountain and killed 8 children.
With her pleading, he left the 3 other children to become 蛇王 Jao, Serpent Kings.

At a place called 杉乃瀬 Suginose, there lived a man called 金衛門 Kinemon.
When he was on an errand to 龍天寺 Temple Ryuten-Ji, he passed near 弁天様 the Shrine of Benten and asked her to become his wife.
Suddenly a beautiful woman appeared. He asked her to become his wife, but she dissapeared.
That night a huge serpent appeared and shapeshifted into a beautiful woman.
Now Kinemon refused, but then she became known as 蛇王大権現 Jao Daigongen.

mizutamari no nushi 水溜りの主 Master of the Small Swamp
A swamp was going to be filled in.
That night a beautiful woman appeared, sying the was numa no nushi 沼の主 the Master of the Swamp.
Since she could not find another swamp to live, she asked 沼田家 the Numata Family to protect her.
The man who had promised to protect the swamp soon filled it in anyway.
But after that, his family was befallen with misfortune.

hebi oosama 蛇王様 The Snake King
In a grove was a sacred place for 蛇王大明神 Jao Daimyojin, who always granted wishes.
Since there was no sanctuary, villagers had put up a flag there and placed saisenbako 賽銭箱 an offering box.
Once a bamboo cutter saw the tail of daija 大蛇 a huge serpent on this spot and ran home in fear.
That was the beginning of the veneration.
But soon the police forbid going to this place and it had to be abolished.

Myojin 明神， Shira-Ame Daimyojin 白雨大明神

Once a fisherman from 内海 Utsumi had a vision:
"I am 明神 the Myojin Deity living in Utsumi.
In former times I was venerated at the local Shrine here.
If you rebuilt the Shrine, I will bring prosterity to the village!"
First he did not understand the message.
It might have been from 蛇神様 the Hebigami Snake Deity.
When they tried to built a Shrine, the villagers used the name 村雨神宮 Murasame Shingu Shrine.
When they performed amagoi 雨乞い a rain ritual, there was a strong storm and rain
and they venerated it as the Deity Shira-Ame Daimyojin 白雨大明神 "White Rain Daimyojin Deity".

しんめい様
渡邊という旧家に、神明宮があってしんめい様が祀られていたが、渡邊家に継ぐ者がいなくなり、しんめい様は不動様 Fudo Sama と呼ばれている盲目の男に預けられた。執筆者がこの男に会ってしんめい様はと尋ねると、小川村の八幡様に預けてあるが、夢で時々取りに来てくれと言われるので近いうちに行きたいと語ったという。

Shinmei Sama しんめい様
三春町庚申坂の神明宮の神明様。この神明様は伊勢の大神宮様で、男と女の一対。（人々が供える）着物が100枚になると、祈祷して伊勢の大神宮に送る。ご神体はしゃくなげの木であるが、ふだんはもったいなくて拝めない。顔の白い布は年に1度ご元朝にしか取って拝めない。男のほうが少し小さく、胴体は径1寸ほどで和紙がまいてある。全長７、８寸。おしんめい様は出たくなると夜中でもいつでも出る。宮を守っている人の夢などで、「出たい出たい」と知らせる。そういうときは、すぐに出ないとしかられる。おしんめい様と歩いていると、76歳のじいさんでも一日中歩いて疲れない。

Koojin Sama 荒神様 Kojin sama
野首にある神明神社の向かって左側に立っている石塔は力を授けてくれる神として信仰を集めている荒神様である。かつてこの石塔が杉の大木の下にあったとき、落雷で木が燃えてしまった。それを見たある女の人が、その大きな石塔を持ち上げて避難させた。これ以来、首にわらじをかけて参り、「荒神でー、荒神でー、おー荒神でー、荒神でー」と3回唱えると力を授けられるという。

竈の上に祭ってある三宝荒神に供える松の枝の葉が枯れかけると家族の誰かが必ず頭痛になるので、常に新しい枝と取り替えるという。村の神明宮 Shinmei Gu の氏子の女性は、片方の乳が小さいといわれている。夜、弦月に星が近づいて見えることを寄り星といい、近いうちに必ず誰かが死ぬといわれている。船おろしの際にまく餅を妊婦が食べると、お産が軽いという、など。

Izanami no Kami 伊邪那美神

The shrine is dedicated to the goddess Izanami
This shrine was mentioned in the “Izumo no Kuni Fudoki”, a record of the culture and geography of the region and is the only record left today in Japan that is in complete condition since 733, meaning the shrine was regarded as very important by the capital at the time.
The main hall uses Taisha-zukuri architecture, but the area where the sacred object is kept is made in the opposite fashion to Izumo Taisha, where order goes from left to right.
Iya shrine is also famous as the very setting for one of Japanese mythology stories.
The Shrine is dedicated to the goddess Izanami who is the wife of the god Izanagi.
Together they were said to have created the Japan Archipelago and a lot of the Japanese gods/ goddesses.
They used to be a loving couple with the same ambitions until Izanami died as the result of giving birth to the god of fire.
Since then, their paths had separated with Izanami belonging to the land of the dead while Izanagi to the living.
After Izanami died, Izanagi had spent days grieving and missing her so much that he chased after her into the land of the dead trying to get her back, only to find that his loving wife turned into a monstrous creature rotten from the inside out. Izanagi ran for his life and back to the living world, chased by Izanami, who was furious because he looked at her face when she told him not to.
In the end, Izanagi shut her in the underworld at the boundary of the living world with a huge rock,

which is now known as 黄泉比良坂 Yomotsu-hira Saka. There you can actually witness the very rock he used to shut the entrance to the underworld.
Izanami cursed Izanagi from the other side of the rock saying,
“For the shame you have caused me, I will kill 1000 people from your world every day!”
Izanagi replied to her “Then, I will create 1500 people every day.”
And they never saw each other again.
Thus, Izanami is forever stuck in the underworld and has been ever since.
Iya shrine might have been built by those who sympathize with her, praying for her to rest in peace.

The festival is held both on sea and land. People pray for a generous harvests and safety at sea.

It is not venerated in normal homes.
For a divination session, the deity is called Tobyo-Tsukai トウビョウ使い or 稲荷使い Inari tsukai.
Tobyo is said to look like 白い小さな狐 a small white fox.

In the village of 下金井 Shimokanai Yakushi is seen as female, a protecotr deity of children.
Even if children behave very badly, they will not be punished.
But if grown-ups behave badly, Yakushi sama will punish them.
Once children played with a statue of Yakushi sama in the mud.
When a grown-up scolded them, he fell ill.

mikogami gasa ミコガミガサ swelling around the mouth
ミコ神は女の筋を伝うと言われている。嫁に行った先で出来た子にミコガミガサが出ると、ミコ神がついてきた証拠なのだといわれる。
ミコガミサマを祀る家の子供にはミコガミガサという黄色いう吹き出物が出る。７、８歳の子供にしか出ないが、ひどいときには顔も頭も鉢をかぶったように出るという。この神を祭らない家には絶対に出ないと昔から言っているらしい。

荒神，子供の神，Shichi koojin 七荒神
梶並川上流の土の河内・木地山・立木・山元・阿草・中右手を氏子とする荒神は子供の神であるといい、忌みあけの宮参りには子孫を連れて参るのだという。その社地は中右手にある三社神（氏神）の境内にあるが、そこには他に七荒神と呼ぶ小祠も祀られている。

In the hamlet of 楮 Kozo, there is a space for 荒神 Aragami in the East of the mountain.
Three hokora 祠 small shrines are located there.
The one on the left is for 荒神 Aragami.
The one in the middle is for hijiri ヒジリ .
The one on the right is for 山の神 Yama no Kami.
The villagers see Aragami as hyakusho no Kami 百姓の神

楮部落の荒神の社地は部落の東の山の中腹の凹地にあるが、そこには3つの祠が並んでおり、向かって左が荒神、中がヒジリ、右が山の神を祀っている。荒神は百姓の神、子供の神であるという。

If she is of bad temper for some reason, she can cause wounds and other diseases for the children.
To appease her, people bring Amazake to the shrine.

真庭郡北部には、ナンドにミコ神を祀る風習がある。

ミコ神さんはおできの神様であり、納戸に祀る。娘が嫁に行くときはついて行く。殊に長女によくついて行く。中島家には昔はミコ神さんはいなかったが、中和村吉田常藤の渡辺という神主の家から移ってきた。シンルイなので移ってきたという。祀って欲しいしるしとして物を出し、祀ると治る。甘酒が大好きであり、旧12月13日が縁日である。この日には甘酒を飲む。

mikogami ミコ神
真庭郡川上村上徳山の白髪のある家では、もともとミコ神は祀っていなかったのだが、主人の母についてきたものと、主人の妻が実家から持ってきたものとの二体を今では祀っている。この神は、よく祀らないと機嫌が悪くなって人にデモノを出したりする。そういうときは、親類の間をあちこち行き来し動かせばデモノが治るのだという。

真庭郡川上村下徳山 Shimotokuyama の宗利のミコ神は、他の神とは別に納戸の奥の方に棚を設けて祀ってある。女の安産や月忌みを守る神であるとされているが、祀り方が悪いと機嫌を悪くしてデモノ（腫物）を出す。

ミコ神さんは納戸にいる神様で、奥に棚をしてお宮を祀り、中に幣を入れてある。女の安産、月忌を守る。甘酒を供える。月の13日が縁日で、正月には他の神様と同じように飾りつけをする。祀り方が悪いと、機嫌を悪くして出ものを出す。出ものが出たときには他の家に移りたがっているといい、法印さんに拝んでもらって幣だけを移す。祭りをきちんとしていれば家にいてもらえる。

中和村吉田では、ミコ神はいなかったが、よそから嫁を取るようになってついてきた。また、美甘村平島では嫁に行くときついていくのはミコ神とイエギツネだと説明する人がいた。イエギツネは嫁が持っていくタンスのそこに隠れていて、婚家で増えるという。

うちのミコ神さんは甘酒好きなので作るたびに供える。ミコ神は子供のデモノの神で、モノやカサが出たらミコ神の機嫌が悪いとして甘酒を作って供える。また親戚歩きの好きな神で、夜中に「この家も飽きたので歩きたい」と言うのが聞こえるとミコ神を背負って親戚回りをする。ミコ神が家に戻りたくなると子供にカサやデキモノが出来るので、酒を一升持って迎えに行く。ある家がミコ神を負うのが面倒で川へ流したら、以来その家に生まれる子にはデキモノやカサが出て、どの医者に行っても治らなかったという。

mikogamiミコ神様は2階の誰もめったに行かない汚いところにいる。つい祀るのを忘れると、子供の頭や口の周りにミコカサを出す。ミコカサは青い色、膿色のものが口の周り頭に出るカサだ。ミコカサが出たら、「機嫌が悪くなった」と言って橋を三つ渡って、3軒ホイトをして飯を炊いてミコ神さんに供える。その前に神棚を掃除して松を立てると不思議と治った。 - - - - -
稲田家は美甘村通見では最も古い。当主の祖父が法印で、ミコ神 Mikogami はその人の妻が湯原町から嫁いできた際に実家から持ってきた。ミコ神はカサの神で、機嫌を悪くしたり怒ったりするとその家の子供の口の周りにミコ神ガサと呼ぶ疱瘡を出す。カサが出ると法印に拝んでもらいミコ神がどこに行きたがっているかが明らかになり、そこに持っていくとカサは治る。

7軒か8件の株内で祀る子供の「もの」の神様。御神体は幣1本で女という。子供にモノが出たら「ミコ神様が淋しくなった」といって株内をホイトして、赤飯を炊いてミコ神さんを祀ると不思議にデモノが治った。子供の神様なので必ず納戸に祀る。

美甘村湯谷の松本家の妻、松代さんは隣の延風より嫁いできている。実家では納戸に棚をしてミコ神をカサの神様として祀っている。実家の近所の子供にカサが出て、ミコ神が祀られていない場合、拝みに来る。ミコ神は古い家にあり、デキモノが出来るとミコ神が出たという。きつい神だという。屋内ではなく屋外に祀るミコ神もあったという。

ミコガミカサができると、法印に拝んでもらいこの神を送ったり迎えたりする。また他の方法として3軒ボエト、7軒ボエトといって、カサの出た本人か母親が3軒または7軒乞食をして歩くと言うものがある。その材料で赤飯を炊いてミコ神に供えるとカサが治ると言う。

Mikogami san ミコ神サン
ミコ神のことをニコガミサンという。アダノマの隅に祀り、他の神さんとは分けてある。棚に御幣だけを祀る。ニコガミサンの機嫌が悪いと子供にカサが出る。カサが出たらサンゲンボイトゥということをする。これは近所の家3軒ほどを廻り、小豆や米をもらうことである。これをご飯に炊いてニコガミサンに供えればカサが治るという。

Ooyama Mikogami オオヤマミコ神
美甘村美甘の入夏家は現在黒田神社の神主である。ミコ神は女の神で子供を好む。2階に祀ってある。オオヤマミコ神と呼び、旧11月13日が祭日で、甘酒を作り子供に飲ませるが、ミコ神には飲ませない。当日一番早くミコ神に参った子供は願い事がかなうという。近所の子供にできものができた時にはオオヤマミコ神を拝みに来る。

落合町田原では、屋敷の東端に小祠があって、そこでミコ神を祀っている。これは腫れ物の神とも、屋敷の守り神ともいう。家によっては、旦土や関にこの神を祀ったりもする。

Nikogami san ニコ神サン
美甘家2軒と谷口家は、古い時代の本文家で、同じカブウチに属している。3軒とも昔はそれぞれの家でミコ神さんを祀っていたが、子供の口のへりにミコ神ガサがしばしば出て困るので、神官の藤田家へ神を預けてしまった。それ以来カサが出ることはなかった。毎年一緒にミコ神さんの祭りに参加していたという。旧12月13が祭りの日だったという。

真庭郡新庄村滝の尻では、ミコ神はアダノマに他の神とは別に祀る。この神の機嫌が悪いと子供にカサができてしまうのだが、そういうときは近所を三軒ほど回って米や豆をもらい、それを炊いて食べると治るのだという。

新庄村野土路では、モノを出して困るのでミコ神の幣を小便槽につけてかきまわし、川へ流してしまったという。

デキモノやカサブタが出来るとミコ神様の機嫌が悪いといい、顔中にカサブタが出来るとミコ神様が来たという。このミコ神様には薬が効かないので、法印様にたずねてどこそこに行きたがっているというお告げでそこに送ったりする。

八束村上長田 Kaminagata では、祟るのでミコ神さんを橋の上から川へ差し出し、これからもヤンチャが絶えないなら川へ流すし、心を入れ替えおとなしくするなら許すとさとして持ちかえった人があり、その後は祟らなくなったと言う。

Mikogami ミコ神，ミコガミガサ
真庭郡湯原町社の本谷の神職家では、ミコ神は他の神とは別に小さい祠を設けて祀る。この神を信仰すると、口の周りに出来るミコガミガサという腫物が治るのだという。

祟って困るミコ神を川へ流したり、神社の境内に置いたり、神官の家へ預けたりしたと言う話がある。湯原町の家ではずっと子供にカサが出て困ったことがあり、神官藤原氏のところへミコ神を預けていたと言う。預けた後は祟りがなくなったという。

樋口和吉氏は婿養子で、実家は鉄山駄床の稲田家である。この実家ではもともとミコ神さんを祀っていた。父親が死んだとき幼少で和吉氏は家を継ぐことができず、長姉が婿をとって家をつぎ、和吉氏は樋口家へ養子に行ったが、その後和吉氏と長女にカサが出た。そのため実家からミコ神さんを迎えて、現在も祀っている。神体は古い鏡である。オクノマに祀る神様と一所においてはいけない。デキモノが出る間だけお供えなどをし、あとは別にかまわないでおく。また血族の間で行きたい所を知らせて廻る。

金原部落では、荒神は百姓の神とも子供の神とも牛の神ともいわれ、荒神様の土を踏ませると子供が丈夫に育つとされている。また、雌牛が生まれたときには、荒神様に参り、近所を招いて祝った。

ミコ神さんをワカミヤサンという。家の裏手の竹薮の中の小祠に祀る。首から上にカサが出たり、モノが青く汁が出るなどしてなかなか治らないときは「ワカミヤサンの機嫌が悪い」という。
そう言うときには7軒ホイトをする。７軒の家から米や小豆をもらい小豆飯を炊いてワカミヤサンに供えればカサが治る。近所の人もワカミヤサンに詣る。

There are three small Shrines:

The one on the right is dedicated to 山の神 Yamanokami.

If people cut the trees of chinju no mori 鎮守の森 a sacred forest, the shintoku 神徳 divine blessings for the people living close by will be reduced.
Families who own a forest nearby will decline, if they cut too many trees in their forest.

Fuji no Jintoku 富士の神徳 blessings from Mount Fujisan

Two springwaters on the top of Mt. Fuji are called
Kinmei-sui and Ginmei-sui (Gold water and Silver water).

The water is put in bottles and carried home.
The water will never grow bad.
Even during kanbatsu 旱魃 a strong drought the wells will not dry out.
Putting paper in the bottle will make it a powerful amulet.

Manai no jintoku 真名井の神徳 the divine blessing of Manai
When the people of 淡路津名郡沼島 Nu Island in the Tsuna District of Awaji begun to dig a well,
they came to a bedrock layer harder then iron and they could not go on.
But from the well near Hashimangu Sha 八幡宮社 the Hachiman Shrine there came clear water that more than 1000 families could not exhaust.
This is due to the 神徳 Jintoku divine blessing of 八幡宮の三女神真名井 the three female deities of the Hachiman Shrine in Manai.

During that time the sea is wild and ryuuja 竜蛇 a dragon serpent appears.
