reigyo 霊魚 spirit of a fish / shinbatsu 神罰
山城国西八条の六孫王社 Rokusonno Jinja の神前の池は汚す事を禁じられた場所である。昔この社に参詣した人が池の魚に石をぶつけたところ、帰り道で急に発狂し気絶した。宿に帰ってから気が付いたので話を聞くと、急に空が曇りその中に竜が飛んでいるのを見たら気絶したと語った。

noojo taishi 能除太子 Prince Nojo Taishi
能除太子が阿古谷にこもって修行していた頃、国司が神罰で足腰を立たなくされていた。太子が祈祷に招かれたが、国司の家は火事になっていて、国司は布団を蹴って戸外に駆け出し、以後、起居が自由になった。この火事は般若の智火によって煩悩を焼いたものであったという。
Mt. Haguro was discovered by a mysterious prince named Nojo Taishi 能除太子 (also known as Prince Hachiko) in 593.
Prince Hachiko, a son of legendary Emperor Sushun (587-592), renounced his title and became a wandering monk. It's been said that a mystical three-legged crow showed him the way to the Dewa Sanzan peaks where he settled as a mountain hermit. After some rigorous ascetic training he saw an incarnation of Buddha in form of some Shinto deities. The prince, later called Nojo Taishi, founded the first temple on Mt. Haguro to venerate the deities he had seen in his vision.

During the time of 太閤秀吉 Taiko Toyoyomi Hideyoshi (1585 - 1592)
the ancestors retreated from Naniwa to Fushimi castle.
They visited 男山八幡宮 the Shrine Otokoyama Hachimangu and stayed there over night.
That night there was a revelation.
The priest held a ceremony and the name of 徳川家 the Tokugawa clan appeared.
That night, Tokugawa Ieyasu had visited 男山八幡宮 the Shrine Otokoyama Hachimangu
and got a revelation that his family would last to the 6th generation.
Indeed, at the time of 綱吉 Tsunayoshi (1646 - 1709), the 5th Shogun, the realm came to unrest.

onimatsu 鬼松 demon pine tree
In 角先渓谷 the gorge Tsunosaki there is a huge youlder called Onigajo 鬼ヶ城 "Demon Castle".
In former times the demons lived there and ruined the land.
At that time, 坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro came to fight with them, but could not win.
He said prayers to 金縄山の観音様 the Kannon Deity at Mount Kanenawasan.
He had a revelation : To cut down the kuwa no ki 桑の木 mulberry tree
and enter the castle from there. Thus he could win.
He bound the Demon with kin no kusari 金縄(金のくさり a golden rope) to
matsu no ki 松の木 a pine tree, now known as the onimatsu 鬼松 "demon pine".
The statue of Jizo Bosatsu nearby is called 鬼松地蔵 Onimatsu Jizo.

Once a man named 八木主税之介信之 Yagi Mondonosuke Nobuyuki went to 日光山 Mount Nikkozan
to pray for good luck and good business and stayed over night.
In his dream he had reikoku 霊告 a revelation about the times of 元禄・宝永 Genroku and Hoei (around 1700).
The three 日光山 Nikko mountains are:
男体山 Nantaisan(2,486m), 女峰山 Nyohosan(2,464m) and 太郎山 Tarosan(2,368m).

karasu 烏 crows
In the early morning of the first day of the New Year, there is a ritual called
senjiki センジキ, 握り飯 roasted rice cakes.
On a rock formation people bring offerings of karasu mochi カラス餅 rice cakes for crows.
Very soon a couple of crows come down from the mountain and take the rice cakes away.
The crows are messengers of Kumano Gongen.
If they are coming, there will be a good harvest and good fishing.
If they do not come, there will be a poor fishing catch.

A similar story is told at 八幡神社 the Shrine Hachiman Jinja in 滋賀県 Shiga, 多賀町 Taga town.

熊野権現 the Kumano Gongen Deity is venerated 光興寺 at the Temple Koko-Ji.
Once an itinerant priest from Kyoto stayed over night in the hall.
When the priest lit a fire, the flames came over tho the hall.
The statue of the deity flew out of the hall and into a field far away.
It was stopped in a huge itayakaede イタヤカエデ Acer pictum tree.
The statue of Kumano Gongen is now at 柳玄寺 the Temple Ryugen-Ji.
The temple provides an amulet with yatagarasu 八咫烏 the three-legged crow.

Once a girl washed her face in the clear water of the forest and soon became very weak.
Her parents got worried and prayed to 熊野権現 the Kumano Gongen Deity for help.
Then therer was a thunder and trembling of the earth, with strange light in the sky.
Eventually it became calm and clear again.
There were two huge dead serpents on the gruond, hugging each other.
The male serpent had fallen in love with the daughter,
but the female serpent became very jealous.
The serpents had a fight and finally fell down dead.

Gyoki Bosatsu stayed at 最明寺 the Temple Saimyo-Ji.

The famous 当麻寺の曼荼羅 Taima Mandala from Temple Taimadera had become quite old and needed repair.
A high priest came to do the work, but the colors he used did not fit.
At that time, his apprentice met an old man from 二上岳 Mount Futakamigake.
The old man told him to dig in the back of 熊野新宮社 Kumano Shingusha.
When he did so, he found a bundle with just the right colors.
The old man must have been 熊野権現 the Kumano Gongen Deity himself.

. Kokūzō Bosatsu 虚空蔵菩薩 Kokuzo Bosatsu .
When making mochi 餅 rice cakes at the temple for Kokuzo Bosatsu,
people used two small red plates and placed 12 Mochi on them.
The plates were placed outside on straw and people begun to chant.
In no time the karasu 烏 crows came to eat them.
Crows were seen as gongen no tsukai 権現の使い the messenger of Gongen.

In 安谷屋村 the village Adania there lived a couple who could not pay their taxes.
So the wife had to go out for work.
The couple shared a contract to stay togeher for eternity
and then the wife left the village.
The woman cut hair long hair and sold it.
Then she bought some fragrant flowers and visite a temple.
On her way she met an old man and asked him to look after her luggage.
On the way back she could not find the old man any more.
She asked the Deity to show her the way.
In a dream she learned that the old man was
Kumano Gongen 熊野権現 The Kumano Deity.
When she opened the luggage found at the temple,
she saw that many cold coins had been put inside.

There is 熊野神社 a Kumano Shrine at 野上町 Nogami town.
Every year on the last day at ushi no koku 丑の刻 the hour of the ox, around 3 at night,
from 龍ノ口山 Mount Tatsunokuchi, there comes shinka 神火 a light looking like being shot from an arrow.
When the farmers see it, they feel blessed at the end of the year.

This time was the best to make a wish or place a curse with the help of the deities, be it Buddhist or Shinto.

During the war in Oshu 奥州 Northern Japan, 源頼義軍 the army of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi did not find enough water to drink.
Therefore Yoriyoshi turned to the direction of 石清水八幡宮 the Shrine Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto to pray.
Then he tapped the side of a rock and oh wonder, water came flowing from below it.
Now the army was saved.
After the war he took some water of this well in a large jar and brought it to Kyoto.
The villagers later dut a well at the spot were the water was found.

When the Mongol invasion started in 1274, the priests from 石清水八幡宮 the Shrine Iwashimizu Hachimangu
and 筥崎八幡宮 the Shrine Hakozaki Hachimangu took a kaburaya 鏑矢 arrow with a whistle and shot it in the Western direction.

Hakozaki Shrine (筥崎宮, Hakozaki-gū) is a Shintō shrine in Fukuoka .
Hakozaki Shrine was founded in 923, with the transfer of the spirit of the kami Hachiman from Daibu Hachiman Shrine in what is Honami Commandry, Chikuzen Province in Kyūshū.
During the first Mongol invasion on November 19, 1274 (Bun'ei 11, 20th day of the 10th month),
the Japanese defenders were pushed back from the several landing sites. In the ensuing skirmishes, the shrine was burned to the ground.
When the shrine was reconstructed, a calligraphy Tekikoku kōfuku (敵国降伏; surrender of the enemy nation) was put on the tower gate.
The calligraphy was written by Emperor Daigo, dedicated by Emperor Daijo Kameyama as a supplication to Hachiman to defeat invaders.
The shrine is highly ranked among the many shrines in Japan.
It was listed in Engishiki-jinmyōchō (延喜式神名帳) edited in 927. In 11th or 12th century, the shrine was ranked as Ichinomiya (一宮; first shrine) of Chikuzen Province.
From 1871-1946, Hakozaki was officially designated a Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社), in the first rank of government supported shrines.
Other similar Hachiman shrines were Iwashimizu Hachimangū of Yawata in Kyoto Prefecture and Usa Shrine of Usa in Ōita Prefecture.

shiraha no ya 白羽の矢 arrow with white feathers
In 1715, at 仙洞御所 the Sento Imperial Palace, an arrow with white feathers came falling down from the sky.
This was considered an auspicious event.
People wrote 和歌 a Waka poem about it and send it off to 石清水八幡宮 the Shrine Iwashimizu Hachimangu.

During the times of 後光厳天皇 Gokogon Tenno (1338 - 1374), the priest 覚乗上人 Saint Kakujo from 西大寺 the Temple Saidai-Ji held a ritual for 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai as honjibutsu 本地仏 the original Buddhist identity of 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami at 伊勢内外宮 the Shrines of Ise.
Then he had a dream vision:
At 二見浦 Futamiura he saw the golden figure of a 龍蛇形 Ryuja Dragon Serpent.
Kakujo threw his Buddhist robes into the sea, but did not see the figure of the deity.
Soon he had another dream vision:
At 無量寿寺 the Temple Muryoju-Ji he saw himself carving Amida Sanzon 阿弥陀三尊 Amida Sanzon Statues.
When he went to the temple, he saw that the statue of Amida was wearing the Buddhist robe he had thrown into the sea.

dozoku tsubuteishi 土俗礫石 / ドゾクツブテイシ special pebbles
On the beach of 伊勢山 Iseyama there is a huge boulder.
All the rocks nearby are of a different stone material.
It came here because 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami played with rocks and pebbles and this one landed here.

The younger sister of 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami is 栗島大明神 Kurishima Daimyojin.
When she married 摂州住居明神 the Deity Settsu Jukyo Myojin she became ill.
She was thrown into the see and floated away.
She landed at (かた) 蚊田の浦 Kata no Ura in Kishu (Wakayama).
The people who saw her venerated her as 蚊田の栗島大明神 Kata no Kurishima Daimyojin.
She promised to protect all women from diesases.
Even now many women come here to prey for healing.

and make offerings of mochi 餅 rice cakes to 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami.
The rice cake offerings are then brought to the mountain and can prevent avalanches.

When 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami was hiding in 岩戸 the Iwado rock cave,
her features were reflected in this mirror.
So the Deity tried to go up to the sky.
The mirror was caught in the robe of an attendand and remained on earth.
Yata no Kagami (八咫鏡) is a sacred mirror that is part of the Imperial Regalia of Japan.
Its name literally means "The Eight Ta Mirror," a reference to its size and octagonal shape.

Tajikarao no mikoto 手力雄命 The Deikt Tajikarao
When 天照大神 the Deity Amaterasu Omikami hid in Ame no Iwado 天岩戸 the Iwado cave,
the Deity 手力雄命 Tajikarao no mikoto tried to open the cave.
But he could not and fell down to earth. The place where he landed is
Togakushiyama 戸隠山 Mount Togakushi (1904).
Surprized by the noise, Kuzuryu no Kami 九頭龍神 the Dragon Deity with Nine Heads appeared.
Where he landed is now called Kuzuryuyama 九頭龍山 Mount Kuzuryu,
one of the peaks of 戸隠連峰 the Togakushi Mountain Range.

Ame-no-tajikarao アメノタジカラオ is written as 天手力男神 in Kojiki, and 天手力雄神 in Nihon Shoki.
手力雄命 Tajikara o no mikoto / 手力男神 Amenotadikaraonokmi
Tajikarao's name means heaven hand power.

Kuzuryu Okami 九頭龍大神 / 九頭竜大神

A local officer went to 九頭龍山 Mount Kuzuryu.
He was told the dragon lived in 種ヶ池 the pond Tanegaike and said:
"Dragon, if you are real, hide me in the water!"
Soon a swirl came up and drew the officer into the water.
Later when the descendants of the officer came to the pond, they were told to pray all night
and then look at the mountain.
Next morning they saw a dragon with nine heads wrapped aroung the muntain is seven rolls.

uishi no tera ウイシの寺, uisu no tera ウイスの寺
During the construction of the Chokotei causeway, the sea was too deep to build anything.
People prayed two nights and two days to 天照大神 Amaterasu Omikami.
The water receeded and they could built a bridge between 安里町 Asato town and 若狭町 Wakasa town.
They also build a Shrine at each town, calling it
uishi no tera ウイシの寺, uisu no tera ウイスの寺.
This is probably the local dialect for O-Ise no Tera オイセ (お伊勢)の寺 "Temple from Ise".

長虹堤 Chokoutei Causeway
Chokoutei is one kilometer inter-island causeway connecting Naha and Asato, built in 1451.
Naha used to be an island and there was no bridge to connect the island to shore. Therefore when the Chinese envoys came to Okinawa, ships were lined up to between Naha and Asato to used them like a bridge.
King Sho Kinpuku ordered State Minister Kaiki to build a road connecting Naha and Asato. As water was deep and waves were high on this area, Kaiki thought the construction must be protected by the god. He erected an alter and prayed for a long time.
Eventually, water became low and the seabed appeared which let construction start. The road consists of seven bridges constructed from Sogen-ji Bridge to Ibegama (prayers' site surrounded by a stone wall in Kumoji).
When Kosei, a member of the Chinese investiture delegate, came to Okinawa in 1633, he noted this road in his poem that " "looks like a long rainbow from a distance".
Later this causeway started to be called Chokotei.
Chokotei causeway was the primary road linking Shuri and Naha from 1451 till Meiji era.
However traffic volume was dropped as train service started between Shuri and Naha in 1914 and a new Prefectural Road (current Kokusai-dori street) was opened to traffic.
Much of the Chokotei was lost in the Battle of Okinawa and to later development but parts of the causeway still remain.

In the fourth tail, he found a great sword inside the body of the serpent which he named
天の叢雲 "Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi".
He offered the sword to the goddess Amaterasu.

The monkey of an ema 絵馬 votive tablet at 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja had been painted by the famous 狩野元信 Kano Motonobu.
It came to life at night and devastated the nearby fields every night.
They had to cover its eyes with cloth to keep it in place.

Mizuchi ミヅチ is a kind of water snake monster.
Until the Meiji period, people who passes at 山王様の沼 the swamp of Sanno Sama dismounted their horse and payed respect to the deity.
The Masters of the Pond at 吾妻神社 the Azuma Shrine in Kisarazu where two 白蛇 white serpents.
At the beginning of the Meiji period they came to live at the Swamp of Sanno Sama.

Her onryoo 怨霊 revengeful ghost had become a huge serpent in the pond.
The serpent would eat people and cause much damage.
So the villagers aseked the priest from 日吉神社 Hiyoshi Shrine to have a ritual to appease her.
Through this great power, the serpent perished.

There lives a fusuma ふすま Nobusuma monster that brings disaster to the people.

A doctor from Fukura was walking along 山王坂 the Sannozaka slope when he met 大入道 the O-Nyudo monster, which took away his fish.
This was itachi イタチ a weasel. On days when it rains, an Itachi can shape-shift into an O-Nyudo monster.

They say the Garan family lived here, but not much is known about it.

Sometimes people saw a light at night below the shrine where 山王様 Sanno Sama is venerated.
A boy thought his brother had come to show him the way, but when he called the name of his brother, he got no answer.
He kept calling and suddenly the light of the lantern estinguished and all was gone. It must have been a Tanuki.

The boulders of Sanno Gongen, Sanno Iwaya 山王岩屋 are at the very narrow part of the Abukumagawa gorge, where a huge boulder hang on each side. The messenger of Sanno Gongen, a saru 猿 monkey comes here often and his footprints are in the rock.
The warlord Abe no Sadato 安倍貞任 used this place for the defense of his territory.

Nangu Jinja 南宮神社 Nangu Shrine
The Deity 大山咋命 Oyama Kui no Kami had fallen in love with 和加佐姫命 (a combination of the legendary 金山彦 Kanayamahiko and 金山姫 Kanayamahime) but the Princess did not like him.
She run away and slipped in a field of hemp and of sweet potato leaves, she hurt her eye at a branch of a tea tree and finally reached 船形山 Mount Funagatayama (1500 m). The Shinto priest had a mortar and his her there.
The preist sat on the mortar and told Iku no Kami to give up.
At the village of Nangu they do not grow hemp nor sweet potatoes nor tea.
If men from the village of the Sanno Shrine go up to Mount Funagata, they will get a divine punishment.
Nangu Shrine is one of the 鹽竈神社14末社 14 sub-Shrines of 鹽竈神社 Shrine Shiogama Jinja.

Oyamakuhi no kami (大山咋神)
The god is also called Yamasue no onushi no kami.
He is the son of Otoshi no Kami and Amenochikarumizu hime.
The 'kuhi' of his name means pile, (heavy beam of timber) indicating that he is a deity who drives a pile of heavy timber into Oyama ("Big Mountain"), and the mountain's owner. According to the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters - Japan's oldest historical record), the deity is enshrined in Hieno-yama (later called and Mt. Hiei) and Matsuo, Kazuno District, and Narikabura is where the deity resides.
Since Enryaku-ji Buddhist Temple of the Tendai sect was built on Mt. Hiei, the deity also came to be regarded as the guardian deity of the Tendai sect and Enryaku-ji Temple. The god is also called "Sanno," the king of Mt. Hiei.
A Shinto school derived from the Tendai sect was called "Sanno Shinto," later changed to "Sanno Ichijitsu Shinto" by Tenkai (a priest of the Tendai sect, who lived in the early Edo period). Dokan OTA built Hie-jinja Shrine by moving Oyamakuhi no kami from Kawagoe-Hiyoshi-sha Shrine to make it the guardian deity of Edo-jo Castle.
During the Edo period, the deity was regarded as that of the Tokugawa family, and since the Meiji period, it has been regarded as the guardian deity of the imperial palace.
Hiyoshi-Taisha Shrine at the foot of Mt. Hiei is the headquarters of all the Hie-jinja Shrines that worship Oyamakuhi no kami across the country. Later, Omononushi (a deity in Japanese mythology) was enshrined in Hie-jinja Shrines; Omononushi is called "Obie" ("Big Hie") and Oyamakuhi no kami "Kobie" ("Small Hie").
"Sanno" is the general term for these two deities. Omononushi is enshrined in Nishihongu ("West Main Shrine") and Oyamakuhi no kami in Higashihongu ("East Main Shrine").
Besides, the two deities are enshrined in Higashihongu (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo Prefecture), and also in Matsuo-taisha Shrine (Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City).

Coming from the compound of 日吉神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja there is a bridge over the river 藤田川 Fujitagawa, called
Tokobo no hashi トコボの橋 "The bridge of Tokobo, the Kappa".
If people want to cross it, there comes a Kappa and pulls them into the river by their legs.
Therefore people avoid passing this bridge.

The bell of 日吉山王神社 the Shrine Hiyoshi Sanno Jinja begun to ring and the temple treasure, a divine sword, stood up to the West.

He practised purification rituals for seven day and then opened the 厨子 small Shrine.

When he looked inside a second time, he saw only flames.
The priest expressed his greatfulness by offering a huge Shrine name plate for the gate with the inscription

A grandmother became suddenly ill in front of the small sanctuary for 山王様 Sanno Sama in the garden and died soon after.
Her grandson asked a diviner for advise and was told that grandmother had kicked at the small sanctuary.
So he built a bigger Shrine to apologize for the sin of his grandmother.

At Shimo-Yushima in 奈良田 Narada village theree is 山王神社 the Shrine Sanno Jinja.
In the compound is a rock called 駒引き岩 Komabiki iwa.
On this rock there are many imprints that look like the hooves of a horse.
They say they date back to the time when 孝謙天皇 Koken Tenno (718 - 770) Empress Shotoku came to Narada and died.
Her grave is in 法王神社 the Shrine Hoo Jinja 奈良法王神社.

Kōga Saburō 甲賀三郎 Koga Saburo
is a character in Japanese folklore associated with the Suwa region.
Many variants on the basic story exist; the following summary is based on the earliest literary version of the tale found in the Shintōshū.
The third son of a local landlord of Kōka District in Ōmi Province, a distinguished warrior named Kōga Saburō Yorikata (甲賀三郎諏方) was searching for his lost wife, Princess Kasuga (春日姫 Kasuga-hime) in a cave in Mount Tateshina in Shinano, with his two elder brothers.
The second brother, who was jealous of Saburō's prowess and fame and who coveted Kasuga, traps the latter inside the cave after they had rescued the princess.
With no way out, Saburō has no other choice but to go deeper into the cave, which was actually an entrance to various underground realms filled with many wonders. After travelling through these subterranean lands for a long period of time, he finally finds his way back to the surface, only to find himself transformed into a giant snake or dragon.
With the help of Buddhist monks (who turn out to be gods in disguise), Saburō regains his human form and is finally reunited with his wife.
Saburō eventually becomes Suwa Myōjin, the god of the Upper Shrine of Suwa, while his wife becomes the goddess of the Lower Shrine.
This version of the legend explains the origin of the name 'Suwa' (諏訪 or 諏方) via folk etymology
as being derived from Saburō's personal name, Yorikata (諏方).

O-Rei san おれいさん The babysitter of 庄屋 the village headman family, O-Rei, had by accident dropped the baby into the well and it died. The angry father threw O-Rei also into the well to kill her.
But soon the headman felt a curse and became very ill.
To find peace of mind he had special rituals for O-Rei held at 諏訪神社 the Suwa Shrine.

When they tried to relocate 諏訪神 the Suwa Shrine to built a castle, a reija 霊蛇 ghost serpent appeared. It lied on the road and did not move. Someone took the branch of a plum tree and hit the serpent on the head. The serpent had a wound on the left eye and left, never to be seen.
Since that event, the ujiko 氏子 parishioners of the shrine never planted plum trees again.

For the festival at 諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja people wanted to get the mikoshi 神輿 portable shrine out, but a Japanese rat snake was lying in there and did not move. A retainer of the 金森家 Kanamori family got angry, took the branch of a plum tree and hit the serpent on the head. The serpent had a wound on the left eye and left, never to be seen.

At 諏訪神社 the Suwa Shrine of 下平窪 Shimo-Hirakubo there is an ema 絵馬 votive tablet of an old woman giving Sake to 金太郎 Kintaro.
This was maybe offered with the wish to be healthy in old age to enjoy Sake.

At 八幡神社 the Hachiman Shrine at 草野 Kusano and at 諏訪神社 the Suwa Shrine at 絹谷 Kinuya there are ema 絵馬 votive tablets from Dewa Sanzan 出羽三山 the three mountains of Dewa. They depict a priest standing unter a waterfall.
In front of the waterfall is a mirror and sometimes people can see the Deity in this mirror.
- At the Suwa Shrine in 絹谷 Kinuya is also an Ema with a serpent. The Serpent is the protector of kaiko 蚕 silk worms, because it eats the rats.

To prepare a water pipe for 江戸玉川上水 the Tamagawa waterway to Edo the villagers cut the shinboku 神木 sacred tree in the compound of the Suwa Shrine. But over night the tree had grown back.
Another time there was red liquid dripping out of the tree. This was a sign that a forest worker from Echigo had died.

In the compound of 古河城 Koga castle there was a huge 椎の木 Shii-oak tree, venerated as shinboku 神木 a divine tree, to host the Deity of Suwa. The tree became very huge, so the villagers cut it down. But when they used the wood as firewood, the place became cursed.

On the festival day of the 諏訪神社 Suwa Shrine there come many visitors and there are not enough dishes to serve them all.
The priest goes to the Shrine on the day before the festival and anounces how many visitors will come. On the Festival day there are just the right number of dishes in a cave near the Shrine. After the festival the priest brings the dishes back to the cave.
One day a family did not bring back the dishes and from that day on, people could not borrow dishes from the Shrine any more.

For a rain ritual, people prepare a large serpent made of straw. Inside they put a living serpent and more straw and then carry it to 番山 Banzan, where the ritual is performed.
Near 蛇台原 Jadaihara close to 下愛子の諏訪神社 the Suwa Shrine at Shimo-Ayashi they make a large serpent of straw.
Banzan has three districts, 東番山 Higashi, 中番山 Naka and 西番山 Nishi. At Nishi-Banzan they call it "jatai banzan".
For rain rituals during a period of long rain, they go to the 黒滝不動 Kurotaki Fudo Waterfall tt the North side of Naka-Banzan of offer the straw serpent. Then the rain will stop.

At the riverpool 七曲りの渕 Nanamagari no fuchi there was a sunken bell and the villagers could not pull it out. One villager mumbled: "If we ever get it out, we should give ti to 松原の諏訪様 the Suwa Shrine at Matsubara." Now all of a sudden they could pull it out and even now it is at the Suwa shrine at Matsubara.

In the ground of the Ujigami at 諏訪様 Suwa Shrine there lived once many serpents. The villagers asked the priest of the nearby temple to perform 蛇封じ special rituals to drive out the serpents and read the sutras. After that, the serpents did not appear any more.

West of the 諏訪神社 Suwa Shrine three is kyozuka 経塚 a sutra mound.
In the forest of this sutra mound there is one place where it rains just a bit on every night.
In this area they say if rain falls at night, there will be bakemono 化け物 a monster coming out.

suo no ki すおうの木 Caesalpinia sappan tree, Indian redwood
This tree resembles the つがの木 Tsuga sieboldii, southern Japanese hemlock tree. If people use the bark of this tree for dyeing things, they can get any color they like. This tree grows in the compound of お諏訪様 the Suwa Shrine, but nobody ever dared to use the bark.

North of the forest of Suwa Jinja there is a stone looking like a horagai 法螺貝 consh-shell.
If there are strange things to happen in the village, the stone makes a warning sound of a conch-shell.
Nearby is also a statue of 地蔵様 Jizo Bosatsu, and some call the stone

There was a place where this special pampas grass grew wild. If anyone got it, he would be lucky for life.
It grows in the compound of 諏訪神社 Suwa Shrine, but nobody dared to get any.

kaeru 蛙 frogs
At 信州諏訪大社 the Great Shrine of Suwa there was a frog venerated at the river 御手洗川 Mitarashigawa, the river where people purify their hands in the water.
Once the Shrine priest cut the ice of the river with an ax and frogs came jumping out. He caught three frogs and used them as an aim for shooting with his arrow.
In the year 1706, on the last day of the year, there was a strong rain and all the ice had melted. So the priest could not get any frogs. But when the first day of the New Year had come, the priest saw three frogs squatting at the stairs to the Shrine. So he could proceede with the rituals. This is one of the seven wonders of the Great Shrine of Suwa.

Once upon a time, 諏訪様 the Deity of the Suwa Shrine transformed into a woman and got married. When she gave birth, a creature with nine heads came creeping and sliding out.
It was Kuzuryu 九頭龍 the nine-headed dragon, which is now venerated at 戸隠 Togakushi.

On the 1st day of June men of the age of 41, their yakudoshi 厄年 year of calamity, go to 諏訪神社 the Suwa Shrine for a special purification ritual.
After that they go to a restaurant or bar and start drinking. These men do not go home the whole day.
If they would go home, they will be cursed.

Two other kami spirits are also enshrined at Suwa shrine, all three of which are celebrated during the Kunchi.

諏訪様 The deity of Suwa Shrine once fell down and pierced one eye with the ears of wheat. Therefore the people in this area do not grow wheat.

The parents thought it strange and had some purification rituals held. The girl then jumped to the local pond and became a daija 大蛇 huge serpent.

On the second day of the New Year, people pound rice at 諏訪神社 Suwa Shrine in a stone mortar. They use the powder to make rice cakes, called o-hataki mochi.
If people eat them, they will not become ill all year long.

During the festival of 諏訪神社 Suwa Shrine, there are two hikiyama 曳山 festival floats, one for each deity.
The floats from each neighbourhood pass each other, hitting the floats and fighting.
This is done because the deity of Suwa Shrine and the Kojin deity like to have a fights.
Thus the festival became known as kenka matsuri 喧嘩まつり fighting festival.

shikazuka no tatari 鹿塚のたたり curse of the deer mound
The Suwa Shrine of 川久保 Kawakubo is counted as one of the 24 major Suwa Shrines of 信州 Shinshu.
At the Shrine they collect the heads of deer. The same order was given to the Suwa Shrine at 小菅 Kosuge.
The bodies of the deer were buried at the border between 山沢 and 大久保. A sekito 石塔 stone pagoda was erected above the grave. If people defile this pagoda, they will be cursed.

Suwa Jinja no Kami 諏訪神社の神 The Deity of Suwa Shrine
The messenger of Suwa Shrine is hakuja (shirohebi) 白蛇 a white serpent. It came down on the river, riding on 「麻からのくき」 a hemp leaf.
The villagers from 睦合村 Mutsuai village 塩沢部落 Shiozawa hamlet saw it first, scooped it from the water and built a small Shrine to venerte it. To honor the situation, the villagers do not grow asa 麻 hemp any more.
Now they hold a festival in its honor at the Suwa Shrine on April 15 every year. During the festival, the mikoshi 神輿 portable Shrine in placed in a small hut erected for this purpose at the banks of the river 富士川 Fujikawa.
But one year they did not erect the small hut and and soon after densenbyoo 伝染病 an epidemic came over the hamlet.
This was the curse of the Deity. Therefore the next year they build the hut again and all went well.
