Amenominakanushi (天御中主 or 天之御中主神,
"Heavenly Ancestral God of the Originating Heart of the Universe")

is, according to the Shinto Kojiki, the first kami and the source of the universe. In Japanese mythology, Amenominakanushi is described as a "god who came into being alone" (hitorigami), the first of the zōka sanshin ("three kami of creation"), and one of the five kotoamatsukami ("distinguished heavenly gods").
- Origin
Amenominakanushi had been considered a concept developed under the influence of Chinese thought, but now most scholars believe otherwise. With the flourishing of kokugaku the concept was studied by scholars. The theologian Hirata Atsutane identified Amenominakanushi as the spirit of the North Star, master of the seven stars of the Big Dipper. The god was emphasized by the Daikyōin[clarification needed] in the Meiji period, and worshipped by some Shinto sects.[2] There are also scholars who believe that the Amenominakanushi concept was introduced in Japan sometime in the 7th or 8th century by the Nestorian or the Keikyo believers, underpinning its Christian origin.

The god manifests in a duality, a male and a female function, respectively Takamimusubi and Kamimusubi. In other mythical accounts the originating kami is called Umashiashikabihikoji ("God of the Ashi [Reed]") or Kuninotokotachi (the "God Founder of the Nation"), the latter used in the Nihon Shoki. Some sources identify these deities as the three Kamis called (three creator-Kami", a conceptualization that also reflect the so-called Kami of the threefold whirl (Amatsu uzu-uzushiyatsunagi) in Yamakage Shinto. These three gods, identified as a third of the three versions of the cosmogonic myths involving the kami, appeared in Takamanohara or the "domain of heaven" during the birth of the cosmos.
According to The Ancient Shinto Deity Ame-no-minaka-nushi-no-kami Seen in the Light of Today, by Professor Katō Genchi, no authentic shrines dating from antiquity were dedicated to this deity, though two "recent" shrines, Wada-jinja (founded in A.D. 1659) and Okada-jinja, are allegedly dedicated to this god. Shinsen Shōjiroku mentioned only two families as descendant of Ame-no-Minaka-Nushi-no-Kami: Hattori-no-muraji and Miteshiro-no-Obito.
With the shinbutsu bunri separation, the deity of Buddhist origin Myōken, the "North Star", which was worshiped at many shrines, was changed to Amenominakanushi.

天之御中主神(あめのみなかぬしのかみ、あまのみなかぬしのかみ)
Ame no Minakanushi no Kami

日本神話において最初に登場する神。天地開闢の際に、別天津神・造化三神の初めの1柱として宇宙に生成された存在であるとされる。
神名は
天の真中を領する神を意味する[1]。『古事記』では神々の中で最初に登場する神であり、別天津神にして造化三神[2]の一柱。『日本書紀』の正伝には記述がなく、異伝(第一段の第四の一書)に天御中主尊(あめのみなかぬしのみこと)として記述されている。『古事記』『日本書紀』共にその事績は何も記されていない。そのため天之御中主神は中国の思想の影響により創出された観念的な神であるとされるが、これに否定的な論もある。
平安時代の
延喜式神名帳』には天之御中主神を祀る神社の名は記載されておらず、信仰の形跡は確認できない。この神が一般の信仰の対象になったのは、近世において天の中央の神ということから北極星の神格化である妙見菩薩と習合されるようになってからと考えられている。現在、天之御中主神を祀る神社の多くは、妙見社が明治期の神仏分離・廃仏毀釈運動の際に天之御中主神を祭神とする神社となったものである[3]。また水天宮も天之御中主神を主祭神の一つとしている。
天之御中主神は

hijama 火玉 / ヒジャマ ball of fire - in local dialect
Once 天の神様 got an order and went to burn a home with a hijama ヒジャマ(火玉)fire ball.
But the qheen of the house was very careful and did not get burned.
She never left the lid on the water jar outside and when it begun to make a strange sound, she kenw that a hijama would fall down soon.

天の神様 Ten no Kamisama
On special days people are not allowed to thatch a roof. If they do Ten no Kamisama will come and cause fire or a flash of lightning.
Once this happened to a home and a blue fire came fallilng from the sky, burning the roof.

tachi 太刀 long sword
During 天の神の祭 the festival for Ten no Kami they use tachi 太刀 a long sword during a dance where a mortar is hit by it. Sometimes this causes sparks and a fire starts.
Once a man stole this long sword but his home burned down and he brought the sword back to the owner.

oni 鬼 demon / Yamanokami 山の神
A fisherman named 六兵衛 Rokubei came to get some material for a new net. At night to came to the cave 大蛇嵓 Daijagura and lit a fire. There came a woman of about 40 years, ate rice with him and drunk his sake 酒 rice wine. They met there regularly until a 天地鳴動 loud sound from heaven and earth was heard and Rokubei lost conciousness.
When he came back to his senses, there was the woman and an old man with white hair.
The woman turned out to be the local Oni and the old man the Yamanokami of Odaigahara.

Odaigahara 大台ケ原

This spectacular hiking course features a moss-draped forest, a beech forest, wild animals including deer and views as far as the sea. Some have compared the views to the scenery in the movie “Avatar."
From the summit is a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside that in the autumn bursts with the rich colour of turning leaves. The best time to visit is mid-October to early November when the various tree species are at their most brilliant.

Grandfather 大宅 貫一郎 Oyake Kanichiro had a zaimokuya 材木屋 lumber shop.
Tenjin Sama appeared in his dream and said "I want to go to your home!" So he went to 富山 Toyama to pick him up. He found a desolate wayside shrine with a small statue. He gave some money to the villagers and took the Deity with him. After a little while, the grandmother of Kanichiro had pain in her arm. When he looked at the statue of Tenjin, he saw that a nezumi ネズミ mouse had nibbled on his arm. He called a carpenter and had the arm repaired. Grandmother's pain was also healed.

The painter 白川芝山 Shirakawa Shizun / 白芝山 (1759 - 1850) had painted a horse on an ema 絵馬 votive tablet in the Tenjin Shrine. The horse came to life and went outside damaging the fields and eat grass. He therefore painted some grass and reins on the tablet to keep the horse in place.

At the Shrine 宝満神社 in the South of 種子島 Tanegashima island they venerate 玉依姫 Princess Tamayori Hime.
At the Shrine 浦田神社 in the North of the Island they venerate ウガヤフキアエズ尊 / 鸕鶿草葺不合尊 Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto.

Other names: Hikonagisatake ugayafukiaezu no mikoto (Kojiki)

The son of Hohodemi (Ninigi's son) and Toyotamabime (Watatsumi's daughter);
the father of Emperor Jinmu. Ugayafukiaezu's name ("cormorant-rush-thatching-unfinished") is associated with the events of his birth; according to an "alternate writing" related by Nihongi, the name was given by his mother Toyotamabime. As an offspring of the imperial grandchild by a sea goddess, he was born within a parturition hut built beside the seashore. But his mother's labor began before the parturition hut was fully thatched with cormorant feathers, and Toyotamabime was seen in labor by Ninigi. In humiliation, Toyotamabime wrapped the newborn child in grass, and abandoned him by the seashore, where he was found and raised by Toyotamabime's sister Tamayoribime.
According to another "alternate writing" of Nihongi,
Toyotamabime could not bring herself to abandon the child, and took him up and returned with him to her palace in the sea. Since she felt it unfit that an offspring of the Heavenly Grandchild be raised within the sea, however, she gave him to her sister Tamayoribime to be taken to the land. Ugayafukiaezu later married his aunt Tamayoribime and fathered the kami Itsuse no mikoto, Inahi no mikoto, Mikenu no mikoto, and Kamuyamatoiwarebiko (Emperor Jinmu).

at the temple 光前寺 Kozen-Ji,
During the annual festival of the nearby Shrine 天神宮 Tenjingu, Tenjin Gu a young woman had to be offered.
Three monsters came to eat the woman. The priest of the Shrine found out about Hayataro and had him drive the monsters.
But then Hayato died himself and is now venerated at Kozen-Ji.

The daikan 代官 assistant deputy governor went to the Tenjin Shrine and his horse drank from the 手水鉢 basin for the ritual purification of hands.
A man who asked him to stop this was hit with his whip. After the Daikan had walked away for about 500 meters, there came a black cloud and he rushed down a slope on his horse. A lightning struck him and he and his horse fell down the valley.
This slope is now called Daikanzaka 代官坂 "Slope of the Daikan".

Around 1920 there was a construction work going on at 大橋の天神様 the Great Bridge of the Tenjin Shrine. From a cave there appeared a huge yellow serpent with a dot pattern and five small serpents on her back. This was the Messenger of Tenjin Sama.

This custom is mostly followed in the Tohoku region.

Offerings to the Japanese deities always contain at least one plate with food from the sea and one with food from the mountains, one fish and one radish.

. 道祖神 Dosojin, the Wayside Deities .
Most of these stone deities are found along the roads of Central Japan, especially Nagano and Yamanashi, but of course also in other parts. They are called by many names, for example:
賽の神 sai no kami, 障の神, 祖神 sae no kami, see no kami せーの神,
sakai no kami 境神> sai no kami; 障神 shooshin; 衢神 kushin, 八衢神 yachimata no kami, 道俣神 chimata no kami;
doorokujin 道六神, / 道碌神 / 道陸神 Doroku-Jin (in connection with the six Jizo statues on the crossroads and the six realms of existence (rokudoo 六道),
岐神 chimatagami, 船戸神 funado no kami; 道の神 michi no kami, ひだる神 hidarugami、アラハバキ神 Arahabakigami and more.
SAI or SAE means keeping out, destructing the way for the evil spirits.
Festivals in their honor are the fire festivities on the old lunar New Year,
Dondoyaki どんど焼、sagichoo 左義長, saitoyaki 賽燈燒, 紫灯、寒灯.

Once the children played with a statue of 明神様 Myojin Sama and let it float in water. An old man of the hamlet took it away from them. Two or three days later, he became very ill.
Maybe this was because he had taken the statue, so he let if float again in water and was soon healed.

. daija, orochi 大蛇 the huge serpent, great snake .
At the end of the Edo period, there was oosugi 大杉 a huge cedar tree with a hole in its trunk at 山幸神社 the Shrine Yamasachi Jinja.
The deity of the Shrine was 老婆 an old woman. Once she threw the 杉葉 cedar leaves into this cave and a huge Thunderstorm lasted for three days, burning the tree.
In the ashes they found the bones of a hebi 蛇 serpent.

The deity is also called
Sei no Kami せいの神.

Sai no Kami さいの神 / 賽の神 can prevent illness if properly venerated in the village.
It protects the road to the village.
After the first calligraphy of the year the paper must be burned and the ashes of the
Dondoyaki fire for 賽の神 Sai no Kami thrown in the air to improve one's writing.
If this is not done, there will be no improvement.
Eating mochi 餅 rice cakes prepared in the ashes of the Dondoyaki fire will keep the teeth strong and prevent stomach illness.

The word kaze 風邪 can also be read fuuja ふうじゃ.
In this case the deity is called go-fuuja sama ごふうじゃ様 Go-Fuja Sama.

The human body has a special acupuncture point called
fuumon 風門 "gate for the cold wind"
and this is where the Deity of the common cold comes into a body.
Keeping this part of the body warm will prevent the Deity to come in.

Kaze no Kami okuri 風邪の神送り Seeing off the deity of catching a cold
Rakugo story, told by 3代目桂米朝、8代目林家正蔵など。

In the Edo period many people lost their lives catching a cold.
If there was a bad cold epidemy in town, people performed a ritual to send the Deity off. They made a small paper figure of the deity and carried if off to the border of their village or town with music of drums and gongs. The paper figure could also be floated away in a river or at the beach.
Once a group went to do that and chanted
"Let's see him off, fast, let's see him off, the Deity of catching cold!"
But there was one person in the village who regretted this act.
It was the local kusuriya 薬屋 drugstore (or the local doctor).
Once the villagers came together to sent the Deity off with great effort, floating it down the river, but 夜 that night it got caught in the ami 網 net of a fisherman and thus came back.
What had happened?
It got caught at night (yo 夜) in a net (ami 網) - a pun with yowami 弱み weakness.

When Sai no Kami was sleeping by the roadside, one of his legs was cut off by a car and he had to live with one leg only.
Therefore as an offering for the New Year and 盆 O-Bon for the ancestors people make only one zoori 草履 straw sandal.
Sai no Kami is also seen as 風邪の神 Kaze no Kami.

鎌倉市太郎 Kamakura Ichitaro was suffering from tagori タゴリ coughing.
In his dream the wild deity Aragamisama and told him to paint a picture of niwatori 鶏 a rooster to venerate. He did as told and was soon healed.
He dedicated a banner to the deity. Members of the Kamakura family never eat chicken and most of the villagers do not do it either.

Once there lived a poor man in a run-down house.
One day in winter he caught a cold. He roasted some surume スルメ squid and drunk some sake 酒 rice wine, when suddenly an old man came out of the closet and left the house.
Well, the old man was 風邪の神 Kaze no Kami, who can not stand the smell of roasted squid. The man wa healed in no time.

During a cold epidemic, people press the hand of a small child on a red piece of paper and write
「吉三さんはおりません」 Kichizo san is not here. Thjs is hung at the entrance, to prevent the Deity of the common cold from coming into the home.
They say when Yaoya no O-Shichi 八百屋お七 Greengrocer's Daughter Oshichi was in love with Kichizo and died from her love, she became Kaze no Kami 風邪の神 Deity of the common cold.
She walks around the village looking for Kichizo, but if there is a red piece of paper she realizes that this is not her Kichizo and goes away.

「境ノ宮」に関連した「塩の道」のサイトを見ている中で、「三峯様」を見つけました。場所は「天神道コース」で、国道148号「塩坂トンネル」の上です。「雪国仕様」とでも言うのでしょうか。形は違いますが、正(まさ)しく三峯社の「お仮屋」です。私が知る限りでは、諏訪からは、塩尻の「南熊井諏訪社」境内にある三峯社が“北限”でした。これが、一気に小谷村まで延びてしまいました。
もうジッとしていられません。
小倉明神の薙鎌を見た帰りに寄ってみました。車でも行けそうでしたが、「塩の道」のさわりだけでも、と国道から歩くことにしました。結構な坂ですが、日の傾きから持ち時間を往復30分と制限したので無理を押してペースを上げました。
茶屋跡や
水飲み場もある峠のような場所でした。「三峯様」の標識があるので、さらに鞍部から高みを登ります。見通しは利きませんが、尾根筋の突端と言った場所に出ました。チョッとした広場があり、其の奥に三棟並んでいました。すでに写真で馴染んでいたので、「オー、これは!」という感動がないのが残念でした。奥には石祠がありますが、銘がないので祭神の手掛かりはつかめませんでした。
観察すると、左へ順に古くなっています。一年毎に一棟づつ更新するのでしょうか。見るだけの者にとってはカヤ(ワラ)を束ねた「電気コードが残念」ですが、三年の耐久性を考慮すればやむを得ないでしょう。
写真は
右側の三峯様です。口元から、扁平な石だけが置かれているのが覗けました。入口上に杉葉が下がっているのが、“塩尻系”と言えましょうか。代表して屋根の傾斜に沿って測らせてもらいました。2.45mありますから、高さは約2.3mとしました。
中央の三峯様には、
御札が三枚確認できました。その一つは「三峯神社祈祷之□」とある木札で、“表書き”に「島 塩坂 三峯講社御中」と書いてあります。
帰り際に、「島温泉」の前を通ってここに来たのを思い出しました。改めて地図を見ると「島」があります。字の大きさが同じなので、大字(おおあざ)「島」ではなく、“同格”の「島と塩坂」講社になりました。
現在、
御札が確認できるのは真ん中の棟だけです。三峯だから三棟・三講社あった時の名残・御札を安置するのは2年目の棟など、三棟並んでいる理由を考えてみました。いずれも決め手に欠きますから、これは土地の人に確認するしかないでしょう。

Once there was a woman that doubted the existance of yamainu 山犬 the mountain dog as deity.
One morning when she opened the door, there was a large yamainu standig in front of her.
He had come to show her that Mitsumine Sama was very real.
She was told to put some tea offerings on the kamidana 神棚 shelf of the Gods. 
When she did so, the Yamainu disappeard.

A painting of a dog is venerated as Mitsumine san to ward off theft.
But there was one family, which had placed a painting in its storehouse, and yet- a thief went in there.
The family prayed to Mitsumine San to kill the thief.
When they looked again into the storehouse, they found their son dead in there.

Is someone is bewitched, it is best to have kitoo 祈祷 a an exorcist ritual.
Another way is to pray to 三峯様 Mistumine Sama and 山住様の山犬 the mountain dog of Yamazumi Sama.
Fire and smoke can also be used.

Sometimes a person gets bewitched by a fox.
He might say: "Give me sake 酒 rice wine. Give me abura-age 油揚げ fried Tofu."
To heal the person paper is stuffed in a gun and then shot.
An amulet of 三峯様 Mitsumine Sama can be placed at the entrance of the home.

A person bewitched by a Kudasho Fox can be calling in a loud voise or keep talking all night.
He might also get up and shake his hands all night.
A simple case can by cured by kitoo 祈祷 a Shamanistic Kito ritual.
A severe case needs to go to the Shrine of Mitsumine Sama and get a paper amulet from 山住様 Yamazumi Sama to place at the entrance.
Soon a Yamainu will come and chase the Kudasho Fox away.

To place ofuda 御札 an amulet of Mitsumine Sama on the blanket of a sick person in bed, it helps to cure.
To put an amulet of Mitsumine Sama in the roof, it helps keep the house safe.

Once a grandpa was possessed by a fox. He got a stomach ace and fell to the ground.
They placed an amulet of Mitsumine Sama on his back.
He got up and run away. then he fell down and was normal again.

Once a family member was possessed by kuda クダ a pipe fox.
The possessed person did not like much food and did not like to watch the family eat. He also did not like to work any more.
The family called a priest for exorcism rituals.
Sometimes it helps to put an amulet from Mitsumine Sama under the matress.

A person possessed by a kudagitsune クダギツネ pipe fox wanted to eat abura-age 油揚げ fried tofu. If people show him an amulet from Mitsumine Sama he will be healed.

A family built a small Shrine for 三峯様 Mitsumine Sama in the garden.
When their dog saw it first, he run there, showed his fangs and howled and then run away with his tail between the legs., into his dog hut, trembling all over.
People who venerte O-Inu Sama will not be troubled by rabbits.

A girl had gotten married and now lived in the house of her husband.
Sometimes she came back home, and at night a dog usually accompanied her all the way home.

The family prayed to Mitsumine San to get rid of the thief.
When they looked again into the storehouse, they found their son dead in there.

A family had placed an amulet from 三峰様 Mitsumine San in their store house.
The neighbour's wife came at night to borrow some rice, but then went into the store house to steal it.
But there was a strong 山犬 Yamainu at the entrance and she did not dare to go out.
Next morning the family found her. The Yamainu was gone.

Mitsumune San ミツムネサン
The family had a small Shrine for Mitsumine San in the back of their storehouse.
One evening a burglar came and stole the tanmono 反物 fabrics.
Next morning they found them at the gate of the temple 実成寺 Jissei-Ji in the next village.
This must have been the beneficial deed of Mitsumine San.

The name Abukuma was already known in the Heian period and used in Waka poetry.
The name of the riverwas also spelled
Ookumagawa 大熊川 / 逢隈川 / 合曲川 Okumagawa,

The name refers maybe to oo-kuma 大熊 a type of huge bear, which lived in the mountains of
白河郡の西甲子岳 Fukushima in the Shirakawa district.
kuma 隈(クマ / 曲) may also refer to the many bends of the river

with a length of 234 km (145 mi), is the second longest river in the Tōhoku region of Japan and the 6th longest river in Japan. It runs through Fukushima Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture, rising from springs in the peaks of the Nasu mountains, collecting water from tributaries leaving the Ōu Mountains and the Abukuma Highlands (阿武隈高地 Abukuma-kōchi), then emptying into the Pacific Ocean as a major river. It has a 5,390 km² area watershed, and about 1.2 million people live along its basin.
The Abukuma River
flows north through Fukushima Prefecture's Nakadōri region, past the cities of Shirakawa, Sukagawa, Kōriyama, Nihonmatsu, Date, and Fukushima. The portion of the river flowing between Nihonmatsu and Fukushima forms a deep ravine called Hōrai-kyō (蓬莱峡).
Crossing the northern edge of the long but low Abukuma hills, the Abukuma River then flows into Miyagi Prefecture, past the city of Kakuda and between Iwanuma and Watari before reaching the Pacific. Abukuma has a tributary called the Arakawa River.

Abukuma-do 阿武隈洞 - Abukuma Cave
is a limestone cave located in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The cave was discovered on August 15, 1969, northeast of the city of Tamura and was originally named Kamayama Shonyu-do (釜山鍾乳洞). It was designated a natural heritage of the town on February 7, 1971, and renamed Abukuma-do on June 1, 1973.
Visitors can traverse a 600-metre-long path inside the cave as well as a 120-metre-long exploration course to view the stalactites and stalagmites. Each stalactite has taken more than eighty million years to form. Beyond the public areas lie about 2,500 metres of cave that are not open to the public. Nearby Abukuma Cave is the smaller Irimizu Shonyu-do (入水鍾乳洞 - Irimizu Limestone Cave), discovered in 1927. Irimizu Limestone Cave was designated a National Natural Treasure on December 28, 1934. The temperature inside Abukuma-do is around 15 °C and the humidity is above 90%.

Abubukuma-dong was discovered in September 1969 from the present Busan quarry site in an area called Abukuma Highlands (阿武隈高地), or Harachitai highlands(原地帯), in the middle of a plateau of geologic formation of irregular limestone deposits, on the west side slope of Mt. Otakine. Since ancient times mining for marble and limestone has been popular in that area. Limestone was also discovered at Abukuma-do. At the year of Abukuma-do's discovery mining in that area was suspended, and a limestone outcrop remains to this day near its parking lot.
The initial discovery of an entrance to the cave is now near the exit of the modern day tourist destination. The cave itself consists of a 12m deep hole, a tunnel running 60m north, and a tunnel running 15m southwest. In March 1970 the Japanese university 's expedition team explored the inside of the cave, and found a main cave ahead of the air hole in the northern end that was regarded as the end point until then. In 1973, four years after the discovery, the inside of the cave was developed for observation and it was opened to the public.

A notable feature of Abukuma-do is the existence of boxwork, a rare cave formation composed of thin blades of the mineral calcite that project from cave walls and ceilings, forming a honeycomb or box-like pattern. Boxwork can also be found in Shimukugama in Okinawa and Sugawatari-do (氷渡洞 - Ice Cross Cave) in Iwate Prefecture, but because Abukuma-do is currently the only limestone cave in Japan open to tourists, it is subsequently the only cave in Japan in which you can see boxwork. ...

Abukuma kyoo 阿武隈峡 Abukuma gorge
福島県中通り地方に連なる福島盆地と郡山盆地の間を流れ阿武隈川により形成される阿武隈高地と奥羽山脈の間の蛇行・狭窄部の峡谷。阿武隈川の浸食により形成された絶壁の峡谷や奇岩、怪岩などが連なる。蓬莱ダム(飯野ダム)より信夫ダムまでの下流側の峡谷部は蓬莱発電所、信夫発電所の発電用に取水されるため河川流量は少ない。

Abukuma koochi 阿武隈高地 / Abukuma sanchi 阿武隈山地 Abukuma highland
宮城県南部の阿武隈川右岸山地(亘理町と岩沼市の境)を北端、茨城県北部の久慈川左岸山地(日立市と東海村の境)を南端として南北170km以上[1]にわたって連なる山地である。その大部分が福島県に属し、おおむね阿武隈川を中心とする盆地である中通り地方と、太平洋沿岸部である浜通り地方との境界線となっている。阿武隈川・久慈川・太平洋に囲まれた紡錘形をした比較的なだらかな山地である。

山容は隆起準平原で北上山地と同様に高地部は全体的に比較的なだらかな地形が続く。阿武隈高地は海底で堆積した大変古い地層が隆起して陸地となり、はじめは日本アルプスのような大山脈だったと考えられるが、その後の長年の浸食作用で老年期のなだらかな地形となり、さらに隆起が進み隆起準平原となったと考えられる。阿武隈高地には侵食による残丘である硬い地質の独立峰が各所に残る。阿武隈高地中央部から西部のなだらかな山容とは対照的に阿武隈高地東部は、更なる隆起と再侵食により深い渓谷を刻む川も多く、阿武隈高地を西から東に抜ける道路の多くは、隆起した高地東部の「畑川断層」・「双葉断層」など断層による断崖状の壁面の急勾配を下っていく[2]。阿武隈高地がかつて海底にあったことを物語るものに、田村市滝根のあぶくま洞などの鍾乳洞、いわき市四倉のアンモナイト、フタバスズキリュウなどの化石産出地などがある。
阿武隈高地は活断層調査結果などより比較的安定な地盤と考えられ、また従来地震による被害の少ない地域でもある。

furu-usu, furuusu 古臼 an old wooden mortar to pound rice
During the flooding of river Abukumagawa an old mortar was flowing past.
A poor villager picked it up and thought he could use it as firewood. Then he saw blood flowing from the mortar, which had not been broken.
He bowed to it in prayer when the mortar spoke:
"I am the deity to help with birth, so please pray to me in this region!"
The villagers purified some lumber and built a small sanctuary.
This is now the Shrine 水雲神社 Suiun Jinja (Water-Cloud Shrine).

In the year 1121, a daija 大蛇 huge serpent came to live in the river Abukumagawa at the waterfall あゆ滝 / 鮎滝 Ayutaki, and brought great harm to the local people.
A courageous villager went to the shrine 黒沼神社 Kuronuma Jinja in retreat until the serpent was gone.
This is the origin of the retreat 羽山ごもり Hayama Gomori.

The boulders of Sanno Gongen, Sanno Iwaya 山王岩屋 are at the very narrow part of the Abukumagawa gorge, where a huge boulder hang on each side.
The messenger of Sanno Gongen, a saru 猿 monkey comes here often and his footprints are in the rock.
The warlord Abe no Sadato 安倍貞任 used this place for the defense of his territory.

yama no sei kurabe 山の背比べ comparing the size of the mountains
In the 阿武隈山地 Abukuma Highlands there is one high mountain. One day this 次郎太郎山 Mount Jirotaroyama (529 m) wanted to compare its size with ツボケ山 Mount Tsubokeyama (487 m).
Tsubokeyama tried to cheat and stood on his toes, but could only make it to 487 m high.
