Once an old woman had a traveler stay at her home, giving him a stone pillow, then took his belongings and killed him.
Then she was cursed by the deities and died.
The villagers built a small Shrine to appease her soul.
Later they called it a Shrine for Inari and it became 産土神 the clan deity for the village.

In front of the Shrine mother will pinch its nose to make it cry out loud. This will cause it to grow up strong and healthy.
100 days after the birth, the baby is given stones to bite on to make its teeth strong.

If a person has died in the village, the craws begin to make a lot of noise.
At night the dogs begin to howl in a gloomy voice.
If the person who had died was a believer of Shinto, his soul goes to 産土神 the Ubusugagami.
If he was a Buddhist, his soul goes to the local Bodaiji 菩提寺 family temple.
When the soul passes in front of a crow or a dog, they make gloomy voices.

People with motion sickness on a vehicle should put some earth from the shrine on their navel to get better.

The ワラジヒキ祭り Waraji Hiki Festival (Shima City) in memori of this event is held at the End of September.

It is in memory of this event:
Once there was a huge man, about 10 meters large, with only one eye and one leg, Dandara Boshi. He asked a woman who was knitting large straw sandals what this was and she told him "An offering for the Ubusugami."
He became afraid and run away.

heso no o koojin ヘソノオ荒神 Kojin of the umbilical cord
Ubusuna Kojin 産土荒神 is the Kojin-version of the Ubusunagami deity.
He is venerated during a birth.
In the Bitchu region he is called heso no oo Kojin ヘソノオ荒神 Kojin of the umbilical cord.

Ohareji no kami 大主の神 / オハルジノカミ clan and family deity
He is a clan and family deity, especially for farmers and fishermen.
Once on an island an old man had suddenly without any reason burned down the Shrine for 大主の神 the clan deity.
He was cursed and died and this whole family died out too.

A man had made offerings at the Shrine Ubusuna Jinja, when a fox came and ate them.
The man went there observing what happened when a beautiful lady (the fox had shape-shifted) came to invite him to have a bath.
When he came to his senses, he sat in a water pot and all the food offerings were gone.

Hakusan Shrine Legends

. Many Hakusan shrines 白山神社 in Japan .
The most important is
Shirayama Hongu Shrine 白山本宮 - Ishikawa prefecture 石川県白山市三宮町
The characters 白山 can be read as Hakusan or Shirayama, both meaning "White Mountain".

A villager of the hamlet were people of 加賀の新田氏 the Nitta clan from Kaga lived had their ubusugami 産土神 deity of their birth place venerated at 白山神社 the Hakusan Shrine. The messenger of the deity was a hebi 蛇 serpent. This serpent was large and thick and had many children.

tateishi sama 立石さま Honorable Standing Stone
On the mountain road connecting 須佐 Susa and 小佐 Kosa there is a small Shrine.
A stone named Tateishi sama 立石さま Honorable Tateishi is venerated there.
People come here to pray for Safety at Sea, Protection from Disasters and Health for the Family.
Some say it is the grave of a nobleman and gold was hidden in the grave.
It links to a great cave where hakuryuu 白竜 a White Dragon lived.

At the roots of the old pine tree at 白山神社 Shirayama Shrine there lived goshiki ryuujin 五色龍神 a dragon Deity with five colors.

If people tried to touch the tree or break branches for firewood, they would experience of lot of bad luck.
Eventually people would not come here any more and the Shrine fell into decay.
At that time the 白山竜神 dragon deity of Shirayama appeared in a dream of a local fisherman.
At the root of the pine appeared a halo and said if they would revive the shrine, all would find good luck and his family would not experience illnes or poverty ever again.
The fisherman did as he was told in the dream and lived happily ever after.

. koi 鯉と伝説 Legends about carps - Karpfen .
The master of the local pond 玉金の池 was a koi 鯉 carp.
One day a man shot it with a gun and ate the fish, but soon he became ill with palsy.
The friend who had told him about the carp became a mouth disease.
Since then people did not fish in the pond any more.
If the villagers clean the pond during a drought, it will soon start to rain.
In July they make an offerind of a life carp to 白山神 the Shirayama Shrine.

Once a man walked around the compound of Shirayama Shrine at night, he could hear the sound of a huge bell rolling down, between his legs and then disappeard.
When he reached the graveyard of the temple 龍泉寺 Ryusen-Ji and crossed the bridge, the bell came rolling again, passed between his legs and then disappeared.

When they did they found a black Buddha statue.
They brought the statue to 白山神社 the Hakusan Shrine as an offering, but it got lost later.

The child complained that two dragon women were fighting about the Shrine and tried to prevent an old and a young woman from appearing.
It confined the two dragon women in the nearby pond.

In the back of 海老穴の白山神社 the Shirayama Shrine in Ebina there is a hole where water comes out.
In former times there was a huge ebi 海老 lobster, hence the name of the area.
Every year, the villagers had to make an offering of a young woman to the lobster.
One year a girl from a hunter family was chosen and she offered to go.
She sat in front of the hole and prayed all night.
Suddenly a strong flash of lightning was seen, heading toward the sky.
Next morning the girl was still sitting there in prayer and the lobster was gone for ever.

If people come here to pray, their tooth ache will be healed.
People also offer images of crabs and crabs are not killed in this town.

The Waterfall basin Hakuja no Taki 白蛇の滝 the the waterfall of the White Serpent is very deep and maybe has no end.
It is about 4 km long like a tunnel and reaches 最上川 the river Mogamigawa.
If anyone falls in this basin, he will never come back.
The master of this waterfall eventually went to heaven and became a hakuryuu 白竜 white dragon.

If rain rituals are performed during a drought and people walk around the pond three days, there will be two dragons coming out of the pond going toward heaven - soon it rains. The dragons are a loving couple.

On evenings with rain villagers saw lanterns going on and off. Sometimes they saw a creature like a bride with watabooshi 綿帽子 a torn wedding hat.

At the shrine 小倉八坂神社 Kokura Yasaka Jinja there is a legend about the beginning of the festival. Once Lord 細川越中守忠興 Hosokawa Tadaoki (1563 - 1646) went hunting with hawks and took a rest at 不動山 Mount Fudoyama. There was one small stone shrine and when Tadaoki placed his staff against it, it opened and one 霊鷹 sacred hawk flew out of it. The hawk kicked out both eyes of Tadaoki. He felt great pain, went home soon but would not heal at all. He realized it was the punishment of Gozu Tenno and had a shrine built in his honor. After a performance of a ritual Kagura Yudate, 神楽湯立, one eye begun to heal. He had 能興行 No Kogyo rituals of Noh performed and the other eye begun to heal too.

About 300 years ago there was a severe ekibyo 疫病 epicemic in the region and the local fishermen and merchants suffered a lot. To help them the head priest of 鞆の浦の祇園神社 the Gion Shrine of Tomonoura prepared many amulets and went to Onomichi, but the local villagers did not let him in, because they said there was a Gion Shrine in Onomichi. They gathered at the nearby temple 常称寺 Josho-Ji and offered prayers too. Indeed, the epidemic stopped miraculously and Onomichi returned to a quiet fishing village.
Many villagers believe in 祇園さま Gion Sama and from June 7 for seven days they celebrate a large festival to honor the deity.

About 800 years ago on a very stormy rainy night, at the 八坂神社 Yasaka Shrine, there appeared a monster holding something that looked like a bundle of thick needles over its head. The soldiers of 平忠盛 Taira no Tadamori (? - 1153) were much afraid, but when they looked closer, they realized it was the kannushi 神主 Shinto priest who had covered his head with wheat straw during the rain.

Kappagami カッパ神 the Kappa deity
During a お花湯立 divination ritual with hot water at the 八坂神社 Yasaka Shrine, people bring two kyuuri 胡瓜 cucumbers, one as an offering for the deity and one to throw in the river as an offering to Kappagami 河童神 the Kappa Deity. The villagers do not eat cucumbers until this festival is over and they made their offerings.
Gozu Tenno Gozu Tenno 牛頭天王 likes cucumbers.

The messenger of お稲荷さん the Inari deity is the fox, but the messenger of the deity Gion sama is the Kappa.
Therefore on the festival for Gion Sama children must not play in the river to avoid accidents. Instead they have to throw cucumbers into the river from the bridge.

. sugi no ki 杉の木と伝説 Legends about the cedar tree .
It is a taboo to cut the sugi 杉 cedar tree in the compound of 八坂神社 Yasaka Shrine or pick up some needles from the ground.
Once the tree seemed to bend and almost fall down, so a miko 巫女 shrine maiden performed an oracle ritual.
She was told to leave the tree alone, the Deity would care for it.

Behind the Shrine 八坂神社 Yasaka Jinja is Ryuu-ga-mori 竜ヶ森 the Dragon Forest. There stood a huge sugi 杉 cedar tree which 6 people could hardly cover with their arms around it. A dragon lived in this tree. The tree was hit twice by lighting, and at the second time, the Dragon went back to heaven.
This special tree broke down during the Isewan Typhoon.
Nearby is a Ryuu-ga-ido 竜ヶ井戸 "Dragon Well" which is used for amagoi 雨乞い rain rituals and prayers.

History and origin
Yoshimura Masamochi, the 65th descendant of Ōnakatomi, was a warrior of the imperial loyalists in Kyoto. During the early Meiji period, he worked at the Department of Shinto Affairs (which later became the Ministry of Religious Education), and took part in policy making for Shinto propagation under the government. Served as chief priest of a shrine, he devoted himself into spreading the teachings of Shinto.
However, when the Meiji government suddenly altered their religious policy, Masamochi decided that it was his mission to lead people to the traditional Shinto values. He founded a religious organization and established a religious facility (a shrine) in Kanda. It became an independent sect called Shinshu-kyō, sanctioned by the Meiji Emperor in 1882.
Masamochi, who was highly favored by Saigo Takamori and Ito Hirobumi as well as other key government officials, spent time with Percival Lowell, an American astronomer and a devout Christian, and taught him Shinto beliefs during his stay in Japan. Introduced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the books of Lowell, more than 200 Westerners visited annual festivals at the shrine during the Meiji period. Masamochi received an oracle just before his death, which resulted in the relocation of the shrine to the current location in the early Taisho period.

Mitamashiro (A physical object of worship)

The mirror (mikagami) of Chrysanthemum of 16 petals is the object of worship. The mirror was enshrined in Edo castle during the Edo period before the buildings of shrine in the castle was destroyed by a fire. After approved by the Imperial court, the mirror was then enshrined in Shin- mei-gū shrine by Keikōin in Reigan-jima island in Fukagawa, Tokyo. The mirror was moved again to a Grand Shrine after the Meiji Restoration. The then supreme priest of the shrine, Kuninomiya Asahiko Shinnō (Prince), who confided Masamochi, he himself divided the spirit of the enshrined deity of the Grand Shrine to the mirror, which was then granted to the shrine when Masamochi left his post.

Percival Lawrence Lowell (1855 – 1916)

was an American businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars. He founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death.
Percival graduated from the Noble and Greenough School in 1872 and Harvard University in 1876 with distinction in mathematics. After graduation he ran a cotton mill for six years.
In the 1880s, Lowell traveled extensively in the Far East.

writing books on Japanese religion, psychology, and behavior.
His texts are filled with observations and academic discussions of various aspects of Japanese life, including language, religious practices, economics, travel in Japan, and the development of personality.
Books by Percival Lowell on the Orient include
Noto: An Unexplored Corner of Japan (1891) and
Occult Japan, or the Way of the Gods (1894), the latter from his third and final trip to the region.
The most popular of Lowell's books on the Orient, The Soul of the Far East (1888), contains an early synthesis of some of his ideas, that in essence, postulated that human progress is a function of the qualities of individuality and imagination.
The writer Lafcadio Hearn called it a "colossal, splendid, godlike book."
At his death he left with his assistant Wrexie Leonard an unpublished manuscript of a book entitled Peaks and Plateaux in the Effect on Tree Life.

Occult Japan: Shinto, Shamanism and the Way of the Gods
Shinto, or The Way of the Gods, is the oldest religious faith of the Japanese people. Based on the aboriginal worship of nature and ancestors, it is a religion of innumerable deities and rituals. As Buddhism established itself in Japan, it absorbed many of the Shinto beliefs while assigning them an inferior status. Officially unrecognized by the Buddhist state, ancient Shinto practices have been kept alive to this day as an occult tradition embodying the magical, primeval, and shamanic rites central to the Japanese culture.
'Occult Japan'
was originally published in 1894 and is still unrivaled in its detailed descriptions of Shinto 'miracles, possessions, and incarnations.' Percival Lowell, an explorer and author of several other works on the Far East, drew these descriptions from his own observations and experiences during his travels throughout Japan at the end of the 19th century. Occult Japan: The Way of the Gods
"Occult Japan" is a wonderful collection of lore compiled from the Shinto path, dating to an important era in which the nation of Japan was rapidly changing; the Meiji period which had begun several decades before was erasing traditional technology even as it changed cultural and behavioral norms- this work then is both about the traditional spiritual system and the effects of then-modern reform on the same. It is as much a work about culture in the secular as the religious sense.It ought to be noted that some trappings of ethnocentrism were applied in the study here.

Mitsumine Sama Legends

「境ノ宮」に関連した「塩の道」のサイトを見ている中で、「三峯様」を見つけました。場所は「天神道コース」で、国道148号「塩坂トンネル」の上です。「雪国仕様」とでも言うのでしょうか。形は違いますが、正(まさ)しく三峯社の「お仮屋」です。私が知る限りでは、諏訪からは、塩尻の「南熊井諏訪社」境内にある三峯社が“北限”でした。これが、一気に小谷村まで延びてしまいました。
もうジッとしていられません。
小倉明神の薙鎌を見た帰りに寄ってみました。車でも行けそうでしたが、「塩の道」のさわりだけでも、と国道から歩くことにしました。結構な坂ですが、日の傾きから持ち時間を往復30分と制限したので無理を押してペースを上げました。
茶屋跡や
水飲み場もある峠のような場所でした。「三峯様」の標識があるので、さらに鞍部から高みを登ります。見通しは利きませんが、尾根筋の突端と言った場所に出ました。チョッとした広場があり、其の奥に三棟並んでいました。すでに写真で馴染んでいたので、「オー、これは！」という感動がないのが残念でした。奥には石祠がありますが、銘がないので祭神の手掛かりはつかめませんでした。
観察すると、左へ順に古くなっています。一年毎に一棟づつ更新するのでしょうか。見るだけの者にとってはカヤ(ワラ)を束ねた「電気コードが残念」ですが、三年の耐久性を考慮すればやむを得ないでしょう。

右側の三峯様です。口元から、扁平な石だけが置かれているのが覗けました。入口上に杉葉が下がっているのが、“塩尻系”と言えましょうか。代表して屋根の傾斜に沿って測らせてもらいました。2.45ｍありますから、高さは約2.3mとしました。
中央の三峯様には、
御札が三枚確認できました。その一つは「三峯神社祈祷之□」とある木札で、“表書き”に「島塩坂　三峯講社御中」と書いてあります。
帰り際に、「島温泉」の前を通ってここに来たのを思い出しました。改めて地図を見ると「島」があります。字の大きさが同じなので、大字（おおあざ）「島」ではなく、“同格”の「島と塩坂」講社になりました。
現在、
御札が確認できるのは真ん中の棟だけです。三峯だから三棟・三講社あった時の名残・御札を安置するのは２年目の棟など、三棟並んでいる理由を考えてみました。いずれも決め手に欠きますから、これは土地の人に確認するしかないでしょう。

Once there was a woman that doubted the existance of yamainu 山犬 the mountain dog as deity.
One morning when she opened the door, there was a large yamainu standig in front of her.
He had come to show her that Mitsumine Sama was very real.
She was told to put some tea offerings on the kamidana 神棚 shelf of the Gods.　
When she did so, the Yamainu disappeard.

A painting of a dog is venerated as Mitsumine san to ward off theft.
But there was one family, which had placed a painting in its storehouse, and yet- a thief went in there.
The family prayed to Mitsumine San to kill the thief.
When they looked again into the storehouse, they found their son dead in there.

Is someone is bewitched, it is best to have kitoo 祈祷 a an exorcist ritual.
Another way is to pray to 三峯様 Mistumine Sama and 山住様の山犬 the mountain dog of Yamazumi Sama.
Fire and smoke can also be used.

Sometimes a person gets bewitched by a fox.
He might say: "Give me sake 酒 rice wine. Give me abura-age 油揚げ fried Tofu."
To heal the person paper is stuffed in a gun and then shot.
An amulet of 三峯様 Mitsumine Sama can be placed at the entrance of the home.

A severe case needs to go to the Shrine of Mitsumine Sama and get a paper amulet from 山住様 Yamazumi Sama to place at the entrance.
Soon a Yamainu will come and chase the Kudasho Fox away.

The neighbour's wife came at night to borrow some rice, but then went into the store house to steal it.
But there was a strong 山犬 Yamainu at the entrance and she did not dare to go out.
Next morning the family found her. The Yamainu was gone.

The family had a small Shrine for Mitsumine San in the back of their storehouse.
One evening a burglar came and stole the tanmono 反物 fabrics.
Next morning they found them at the gate of the temple 実成寺 Jissei-Ji in the next village.
This must have been the beneficial deed of Mitsumine San.
